Will I Rub With New Tires

Hi, i have a 2005 4x4 access cab Tacoma with OME 884's up front and a 2 inch aal in the rear. I also have 5100's all the way around. I currently have stock 265/70r16's on it right now and i was planning on upgrading to 265/75r16's. I was curious though, would i rub if i got 255/85r16's? I dont mind maybe trimming the mudflaps, but other then that i wouldnt want to do any trimming. Also, would i rub if i got 285/75r16's and purchased wheel spacers. Keep in mind that i'm running stock steel rims. Thanks

 

Chances are, with 255/85/R16, you won't rub at all. You will have to do some minor trimming (and maybe a BMCM) with the 285/75R16. 265/75R16 are no problem.

 

Okay thanks. Do you know of any cheap places to buy 255/85r16's?

You may rub and you may not. All depends on backset and alignment. I have those tires and rub every once in a while, but nothing to be concerned with when offroading.

Not sure why you would want spacers because IMO all they do is usually push the tire out further so you rub your fenders more.

They're the 2004 Tacoma TRD wheels so I don't know what the back spacing is on them. I'm debating on whether I should spend the extra and get the 255/85r16's and take the risk of them rubbing or if I should just buy 265/75r16's and play it safe.

 

If you were originally going to 265/75 and only have 884 coils, my guess is that you are not an offroader and are more interested in dressing up your rig. This is fine, I'm just attempting to give the right advice for your application.

255/85 would not be my choice for you because they are more a functional tire than a fashion tire. They are very skinny, and most people don't find that as visually appealing as a wide tire. However, I'm pretty sure they will fit fine. You may need to remove the front mudflaps - I don't have a set to see if they fit with them on. The only reason I can't outright say if they will fit is because of our differences in lift components, but my gut says you would be OK. Just measure the wheels for backspace (google how to do that). I have stock TRD OR rims, which I believe is 5.3" BS, which is working for me and a lot of the other guys.

265/75 may do the job, but with the lift I'm guessing might look a bit small. You will need to do your own research on that.

285/75 will be the most appealing, but requires the most work. You will need upper control arms, new rims or wheel spacers, remove front mudflaps, trim front flares, body mount chop, and your shop may need to play with getting the caster angle slightly positive (depending on tire). It's a dedicated process.

If you want tires for offroad purpose, I would first look into moving to 885 coils. All websites I have seen are advising 05+ trucks to move up to this size, most likely because the 884 is too soft and causes tire rub, maybe it bottoms out too easy. Since they all cost the same, I'm assuming it's not a sales thing. I had 885s before adding armor, and it felt fine.

 

No i do offroad occasionaly. I just couldn't see spending the money on new UCA's so i played it safe by getting 884's. Now i'm starting to regret it as i would like to get a true 33 inch tire like the 255/85r16 but i don't want to have to worry about rubbing my fender if i flex it too much on a trail.

 

Alright so i did some research and i found out that my 1st gen trd rims have 4.5 backspace. Do you guys think that is enough to clear 255/85r16's without rubbing at all?? thanks

 

Okay so i did some measuring today. From ground to the edge of the front fenders is 37 inches and in the back its 38.5 inches. I currently have 265/70r16 with 5/32 tread left on them. My stock 1st gen rims have 4.5" of backspacing. To me it looks like they will barely fit if at all. Is anyone running 255/85r16's with these same measurements? I want to make sure they will fit before spending 900+ dollars and getting them. Someone please let me know. Thanks

 

With 255/85/R16's and 265/75/R16's, there should be no problem.
You'll probably need to do a bit of trimming with the 285/75/R16, I would think.

 

You might take a look at 2chains pics, that truck has a 3" lift with a similar over all tire size (285/70r 17) .... My math is usually suspect but I think that is close to the one you mentioned

I have the 255/85/16 BFG KM2s on 1st Gen TRDs but my lift is 885s on OME shocks & Dakars on a 4Banger AC so I got a 3" lift. What is your center hub to fender measurement? Some limit their up travel with bigger bump stops. The only time I have rubbed was three times at full lock when I bounced the front too hard it slightly rubbed the bump on the mud flap.

My measurements for the front are a tad more then 23 inches from center hub and in the back around 24.7. I want to get the 255/85r16's but since i will be ordering them off the internet i want to make sure they wont rub at all because i don't want to do any trimming other then maybe the front mud flaps.

 

I think you have as much information as you are going to get. Not much else we can do.

 

Mine are 5.25 so my wheels are tucked into the frame further by 3/4".

The only thing I would be worried about is the tire sticking out so far it clips the fender when compressed. Mine have plenty of room to stuff them to the sky.



from the looks of my rear tires another 3/4" shouldn't hurt.



the front may be an issue though. hopefully someone with similar BS can comment. I rub the PS fender ever so slightly when mobbing whoops with the wheel locked

one day Ill trim the plastic in front...the black shit is silicone from "mounting" my mud flaps after I ripped them off lol

 

Mine is currently sitting very nose down in the driveway & the front is at 22 3/4" when level I think it's around 23 3/8".
884s & 885s have the same spring rate (the 885s are just a little longer) but you have a V6 & I have a 4Banger so you have more weight up front (it will bounce more than mine).
If all else fails you can bump the billies up to .85" for more lift.

 

Sorry to bug you guys some more but does anyone know what the optimum backspacing would be for my application if i went with 255/85r16. I'm wondering this because i'm considering buying new rims.

 

I think most of us are running the stock rims. This is some of the attractiveness to this tire size - saving money on rims!

I'll comment if I have any rubbing issues after the 20th when I have my big offroad class, but so far so good. I'm doing slower stuff, but I'm doing heavy flexing.
I did some offroading the last two weekends on some stuff that was hard enough that I had the locker on. Aired down to 17 and there hasn't been a peep out of these things.
Keep in mind I'm trimmed for 285s, so I might not experience as much issues.

I will say that at 17psi these tires flex like mad, possibly too much, so I'm trying 20psi and might go higher still.

On road I'm running 40psi, not sure if I should go higher. XXXX, what are you pumped to?
