Just a small word of advise to everyone rotating your spare in. Stop before it's to late.

IMO you should never switch sides with any tire front or back. The belts in a tire get used to going one direction. When you switch sides the tire goes in the opposite direction. This CAN cause serious issues with the belts and turn the tires into useless pieces of rubber. Now this won't happen to everyone, but it happened to me and turned 4 tires into poop way before they were bald.

If you don't believe me, please seek the advice of a pro that has been working on cars for many years. I know one of the most experienced tire/alignment guys on here will tell you the same.

To each his own and I hope you guys never ruin your tires. Just wanted to give everyone some words of caution that could save you thousands of dollars.

I only buy sets of 5 tires for my matching wheels. When you run the 4 down to bald sell the spare as brand new. Your basically throwing money away IMO.

I would never do either of them. Those rotation schedules are looking for trouble. Never switch sides....

been through 4 sets of tires with zero issues and doing 5 tire rotation and switching sides. I only keep rubber on the same side is 1) they are directional 2) different sized rims/width on front/rear - in this case I flip the tires and have them remounted on the other side.

Keep in mind the g pattern above is for 4wd and when you have a spare. 4wd with no spare should follow this:

before I started keeping a full size spare I did the C pattern

Great. I'm glad your 4 sets of tires are fine. Talk to someone who has been doing this for 30-40 years and has installed thousands of tires and has had hundreds on their own cars/trucks. then Ill still will not consider it right. I know WHY my tires failed and I know people who know their shit and say not to do it. If you want to play roulette with your tires I wish you good luck.

Don't even bring up the directional non-directional theory. You were not comprehending my statement. The belts get used to the rotation and settle in. When you flip them it CAN have a bad impact when the belts go to settle into the other direction.

Ill leave this thread so you guys can flame away about never having any issues, but when you blow 1k on tires that turned bad I hope you'll remember the one guy telling you to do it the right way.

    Enjoy!

    Your tires are expensive

Are you saying that criss-cross rotation increases the potential for tire belt separation? Not saying I do/do not believe you, just looking for information as to what belt point of failure you're referring so I can form an opinion. Also wanted to point out that the owners manual recommends not to criss-cross, tho not sure if this only applies to directional tires.

to each their own. i've been rotating my own tires for over 30 years personally - yes i'm dating myself but never had any issue. We all have our opinions and what we like. even my race shop (http://www.rogerkrausracing.com/) that does all my custom alignments, corner weights and tires on other cars of mine agree with my rotation movements. different stroke for different folks.

its like calling the DMV in California - ask 1 question to 10 people you will probably get 12 different answers ;-)

PS: I dont even spend 1K on a set of 4 Michelin pilot sports for my 911 or my 35" Mickey MTZ's installed - sounds like your shops like to rape a bit

As previously stated I ONLY BUY SETS OF 5. We did not scientifically examine my tires. They were A OK. Rotated them side to side and less then a week later they were toast. Wobble Wobble Wobble is about as scientific as we took it. Tried rotating them back and still Wobble Wobble Wobble

    To each their own.

Please show me the link where I can get (5) 265/70/17 Duratracs for less then 1k.

Please show me the link where I can get (5) 255/85/16 KM2's for less then 1k.

On the one hand, we have your assessment and expertise.

On the other hand, we have credible authorities such as :

    Cooper tires

    Bridgestone/Firestone

    Tire Rack

You're gonna need a bigger set of data than "This one time at band camp..."

So you totally left out the poor guy who needs new tires? Typical to slant it to your own way of thinking. You should seek political office.

Personally I hope you keep criss-crossing and 5 of your tires turn to shit.
I could care less what you think. Just trying to save the people who aren't assholes from ruining their tires.

Do you think I'm trying to get you people to ruin your tires? Whats my motivation to sell tires like the tire companies are? Hmmm..

    Good day DB.

I don't run either of those tires but here is my online receipt for 5 MTZ - Summit price match - ended up being cheaper because they have inexpensive freight charges and no tax

No reason to flame/profane, and I don't have a way of thinking to slant towards. The guy who needed new tires never showed a correlation between his issue and criss-cross.
Would appreciate more respect to those TW members who hold a different opinion, we're all trying to save the world

So you're suggesting that using a tire and getting my money's worth out of it is a worse fiscal idea than not using it and trying to sell someone a 3 year old "brand new" tire?

As for the topic of cross rotating tires; I've only got my small sample of experience to go on so I'm not going to tell anyone what to think. But, all the experts I've consulted (including the people that actually design and test the tires) seem to agree that there's nothing wrong with the practice. So unless you think it's all just a conspiracy to prematurely wreck tires to sell more of them....

Question! I have 17's and 285's on my truck now. Say I got a flat. Would I be able to swap in my spare 265 R16 in a pinch and be ok? Or do I HAVE to get a new 17 inch rim with a 285 tire?
