Why, hello!

As others have said here, I was prompted to make a post on the new members forum, so here I am.

I was browsing information about my taco and saw this forum referenced some where. I've checked out some of the mods and this place looks like a great resource. I'm a first time buyer of a taco (and first time truck owner) so I'm trying to find out as much as I can. I purchased an '08 6cyl TRD package taco in Dec '07 and it's great so far. Just hasn't snowed enough yet...

Also, if anyone has any recommendations or can point me to good resources here (though I may find them after I make this post) on push-bars and/or some sort of kayak mounting system (that works with a tonneau cover!), I'd appreciate it.

Length of kayak? Soft or hard Tonneau? Number of Kayaks needing transport?

It's two Kayak's, sea kayak's, the largest of the two is about 17'. As for the Tonneau cover, I was thinking some sort of hard top, but with lugging a kayak on top, I'm not sure that's possible.

I'm not sure that 17' kayaks are going to be easily transportable on top of a tonneau cover. My largest kayak is 12'6", and I think even that is pushing the un-assisted limits of the bed as wven with the tailgate down I've got about 4'6" sticking out the back of the truck with a red flag on it.

If you plan on transporting the kayaks regularly you might be better with a cap with a roof rack on it, and an additional crossbar on the roof of the cab of the truck.There was a discussion about that here.

If it is just going to be an occasional thing, then you would probably do fine with one of those bed extenders that go into the receiver and add support to things hanging off the end of the bed. Something like this.

I think it was Sawdust, who found them cheep somewhere you could send him a PM and ask where that was as I can't remember. Of-course that depends on how much other stuff you need to transport at the same time as the kayaks. If you're going to need the bed for other stuff then I think a cap or a ladder rack will be your only way to go.

As for a ladder rack... I'd go with the thule 421 Xsporter, and XK1 Xsporter Adapter, and then any of the Thule kayak carriers of your choice. Since it is more easilly removable and easier to store than traditional ladder racks so you are not sacrificing the fule mileage for having it on when you don't need it.

Adam: I have a 2000 extended cab with the xsporter and just traded in for a 2011 access cab. Do you think I can purchase the XK1 adapters to make it work? Thanks, Aaron
