Is this what you call "axle wrap?"

When my truck comes to a stop, oftentimes I feel what would be described best as a "clunk." Then, after taking my foot off the brake, a split second after pushing the gas pedal, there's another "clunk" as the truck begins accelerating. The strange thing is that not only is it inconsistent in how often I experience this, but the severity of it as well. Some days it won't happen at all. Other days it happens every stop (and acceleration). Sometimes it is hardly noticeable, and other times it's so bad that I instinctively look in the rear view mirror thinking that the car behind me rolled into me. It doesn't matter if I change how hard or soft I stop and accelerate.

Is this what some of you describe as axle wrap, or does this sound like something else? If it is axle wrap, I think it was mentioned that an AAL would stop the problem. Would the rear leaf spring tsb fix this as well? Seeing as how I have an '09 (and who knows when the '09s would be added), if both options would fix this, I would prefer to take care of this sooner rather than later, which would mean I'd be looking at the AAL option. Is there any difference (performance, comfort, etc) between an AAL vs the tsb? In other words, assuming I don't mind spending the money on the AAL, would there be any advantage to waiting until the '09s are covered?

If anyone has any answers or suggestions, I would love to hear them, as this issue is quite embarrassing, especially on a new $30k vehicle.

    Thanks

I've felt this before too. I feel it lurch forward after I come to a complete stop. I used to think it was because I didn't have the brake all the way down but it happens to often for that IMO. I was at a drive thru once and had to look in my mirror because I thought someone had hit me in the back. I'm curious if others experience this.

Dude, all I know is that I've got the same thing. Already had the rear TSB done and it's still the same. Bothersome as hell. I'll keep a look out and see what others say.

It happens to me a couple times a week when i roll up to a stop sign, I was kinda wondering if anybody else was experiencing this too.

yes....this would be axle wrap, and either an aal or the tsb would take care of it.

Its more accurate to say a TSB or AAL would Help the problem, rather than take care of it completely

Also sounds like you have a combination of axle wrap and the truck downshifting. It doesn't (at least mine doesn't) seem to downshift until after its stopped/stopping.

I"d have to see/hear it...but it sounds like you have a combo problem...

Axle wrap should not have a noticeable impact on slow stops/accels...even with the pre-TSB springs...

Might get the trans fluid checked at the dealer...Tell them you think it down shifts rough.

I don't know if this would be related or not, but I've always thought that it shifts from 1st to 2nd somewhat abruptly sometimes. Other gears are smooth, but that first shift is definitely not.

Does either the AAL or the rear leaf spring tsb have an advantage over the other?

sounds like a torque converter issue to me, not axle wrap. Are all of you automatic? My 03 auto truck used to do it constantly, and now i have an 02 standard and thats pretty much why

Yes, automatic. Under 5k miles on the truck right now, and it's probably been doing it for a least a couple thousand miles. The truck is completely stock, and I don't drive it hard at all.

well if your axle wrap is that noticeable in a stock truck, then thats pretty damn scary!

That right there just screams t/c to me...in my old mustang, same thing happened except it popped the dash trim around the radio OFF THE DASH lol.

Does it ever like stutter or "buck" at certain speeds, probably around 40mph in O/D. Try driving it really easy and keeping it at a real low rpm in O/D and see if it stutters or anything, you will know if it does it. It shouldnt do that seeing that its brand new. If it doesnt do it, then thats good but still doesnt rule out the tranny. I have a hard time believing axle wrap would be that noticeable, unless something is just horribly wrong from the factory.

Well, I took my truck in for the 5,000 mile service this week and mentioned this "clunking" that I was experiencing. Two different mechanics took it for a test drive (one was supposedly the lead mechanic), and neither one felt it.

So there you go, it was apparently all in my head all along...

Its not in your head. Its axel wrap. Alot of the techs at the dealer only know what the FSM tells them to know.

I can't believe this thread. That is is NOT axle wrap. It is binding on the spline joint on your rear driveshaft. VERY well documented on the boards. It is a nuisance on the 4WD DC's. It can be disassembled and lubed, but no idea if it is worth the trouble.

    Sheesh.
