    Let’s talk about the lockers out there, different options, cost, installation, etc​

    I been searching around and haven't found a good solid thread just talking about lockers (maybe I didn't search good enough)
    Correct me anywhere I am wrong, and I took info from all around the site(thanks to those put the info up)​

    [FONT=Calibri,Times New Roman]Most people say rear but I think front is better for 2 reason:[/FONT]
    [FONT=Calibri,Times New Roman]1. when you are not on 4x4 and in street, front wheels turn freely so your locker is not engaged.... no bang boom, no tire wear, no drive train wear[/FONT]
    [FONT=Calibri,Times New Roman]2. When on 4x4 I rather have more traction on front wheels since you steer with them and choose directions[/FONT]
    [FONT=Calibri,Times New Roman]Down side, when on 4x4 its hard to turn the wheels with locker (that is my experience with my zuk and no power steering)[/FONT]

    [FONT=Calibri,Times New Roman]_I am still not sure whether No-slip gives the same 100% lock same as lock-rite??[/FONT]

    I have a No-Slip in the back of my 97. I have put lots of miles on it and really like it.
    It is a 100% lock, just like a lock-rite, but it's very smooth. Its hard to tell that its back there most days.

    Unless you have manual hubs, i wouldn't run an 'auto' front locker. You will notice that the steering is more difficult.
    Also a front locker is going to be hard on your cv's. Expect some breakage.

    An ARB selectable locker is the best choice for installing in the front.

    Actually you are right about the front locker. My zuk was manual hub that's why it wouldn't engaged unless I was on 4x4 and hubs on

    For sure ARB is nice but $$$

    If you drive on pavement in the snow, having a selective locker in the front is a bad idea. Unexpected lockup in the rear is bad enough.

    Unexpected lockup in the front - not a great idea.

    Also, with our non-solid axle IFS with CV axles - it's pretty easy to break a CV. Adding a locker just makes it easier. So you'd prefer to be in control of the situation where it locks.

    Finally, most situations where a locker is required are climbs. In a climb, weight is transfered from front axles to rear axles - therefore traction at the rear is most important.

    Nice research... on the gear numbers... thanks!

    The rear locker is not needed ofor most off roading, only if you could get stuck or have a steep grade with loose footing. The lctronic/ brake limited slip we all have since 2009 model does an excellent job in 4WD-HI and greatly improves travel over open differentials only. Sadly for others, only the Off Road TRD has traction control in 4WD-LO (from the factory).

    Anyone have installation cost figures for the ARB locker? I have a sport with clutched LSD and just wondering about cost for installation (probably dreaming here). I've searched but to no avail yet :p

    Just the back and no regearing, right?

    Around 450 labor just for the diff if you drive the truck into the shop and install the air compressor and line yourself.

    Had to bump this thread. LSD off roading is amazing. I had it in both of my ford rangers. 3' of snow, went through deep ish mud very well. My taco can't go where my rangers went when it comes to needing traction. (I'm running the same tires even) the electronic LSD... Sorry to say, is crap compared to true mechanical LSD. Although a locker is in my.... Distant future. Too rich for my bank account.

    But that's just my $0.02

    For a Selectable (switchable) locker there are Three choices:

    1. ARB air locker.

    2. Switch entire rear axle with a TRD-off road electric locker and wire up a wiring harness on your own.

    3. Eaton e-locker. More expensive than either of those, difficult to source, and you also have to wire up your wiring harness. But someone on TW did it once.

    I had a Lockrite locker in my '99 Prerunner for over a year, drove it daily and never once got the loud "bang" that people complain about.

    It did however made a very audible "click click click.." sound when taking turns, but that was normal for a full-time locker.

    My understanding is that the loud "bang" happens when the locker disengages when making a turn, allowing the differential to do is normal thing. But I never got the bang, so maybe Lockrites are better lockers than other brands or I was just a really gentle daily driver (highly unlikely as I was 19 at the time).

    I will say this though, adding a locker to my 2wd Prerunner made me almost 100% as capable on the desert trails I used to run as my 4x4 friends. A locked 2wd is a very capable truck, probably the single best mod you can do to a 4x2 if you want to take it on trails.
