installed the tailgate handle w/camera on my 08. ran the wires from the camera harness to the cab. since I don't have the female plug that's plugs into the lcd/rear view mirror, I'm just gonna have to tap into the wire. my problem is that I don't know which wires to tap into. there's 4 wires coming from the camera, and I hooked up another wire to the reverse wire at the rear tail light.

    any help is greatly appreciated.

here's the wires coming from the mirror. this mirror came from a 2010

^^^ I've check the thread. I don't think it answers the problem that I have. I just want to know which wire from the camera goes to which wire from the mirror. And also which wire the reverse goes to.

This may or may not help you. I have an '09 that came prewired from the factory with the camera installed. I also have the '09 factory wiring diagram, I don't know if any changes were made on the '010's but here is what the diagram says for the '09 mirror:

    Pin #6 - White
    Pin #7 - Red
    Pin #13 - Shielded*
    Pin #14 - Black
    _______________
    * For Pin #13 the diagram shows that it starts out at the camera as lavender-colored but the notation on the wire changes to 'shielded' along the way prior to the mirror.

    Good Luck!

    thanks again to Taco'09 & BamaToy1997.
so I tried to hook it up again today, with some success but still a no-go.

hooked up the following wires like said above:

red wire from camera to red wire from mirror. also connected a separate wire coming from the reverse light to those 2 wires.

black wire from camera to black wire from mirror. also connected another wire for power to those 2. (12V power source from the over head consoles)

blue wire from camera to blue wire from mirror.

*now here's the problem, there's no white wire from the mirror that I can connect the white wire from the camera with. I'm not sure if it's specific on certain years or model of mirror. *

tried it to see if it works, screen comes on for 4 second then goes off, at the same time no image just a blue screen.

anyone know what's wrong? is my connections wrong? do I need a connection for the white wire for it to work?

please please help... frustration is killing me

Do you have any paperwork for what you bought? I would like to see the wiring connection diagram for the camera you got. We can do this, but with only part of the information, it is difficult. My concern is too many attempts and you could send voltage onto the wrong wire, destroying the camera or the mirror. Lets look at everything and get this right. Let me know as much as you can about what you bought, and where it came from.

Just a thought here also, have you considered going to either Toyota and buying the connector itself, or perhaps visiting a junk yard and seeing if you can get part of that harness, to include the connector? It would make for a much neater install, that's for sure.

I am looking back over the photos and the posts trying to figure this out. I find it strange that the photo you showed of the wires coming from the mirror do not match the colors that are indicated by the wiring schematics for a 2010. If you look at my prior post, it shows that the mirror has 3 different red wires, yet your photo only shows 1. and some others do not match. We definitely need to get the information sorted out before you connect up any more wires.

And yes, the white wire needs to get connected for the camera signal to work. We just need to find the correct wire. it is NOT to be connected to body ground.

I'm thinking the same thing that BamaToy1997 is. The wire colors you show are bugging me as they don't match the colors on the schematic of the '09 either. It is best to keep the colors the same as factory in order to trace them and reduce mistakes.

Electronic supply stores, usually sell the wire in cut to length. You can usually get the right color from these places, but finding tracer stripes is difficult, but at least you will be most of the way there.

Also, make sure you got the pin number locations correct for the connector. This will really mess you up in a hurry and possibly ruin stuff. GO SLOW and TRIPLE CHECK the PIN LOCATIONS!

Toyota uses the the method on most of its connectors of counting the pin location numbers as viewed from the connector's face (not where the actual wires enter on the back) and the snap connector is located on the very top.

For my '09 the mirror connector is identified as I8 (not 18), a 14-pin connector that is part no. 90980-12370.

With the snap lock located on top, and facing the front of the connector, there are two rows of 7 spaces and the pin numbers are as follows:

    Top Row, left-to right: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
    Bottom Row, left-to-right: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14.

However, of you look at the connector from the rear, as the wires would actually go in to it, again with the snap lock facing the top, the pin locations would be as follows:

    Top Row, left-to-right: 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
    Bottom Row, left-to-right: 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8.

Perhaps BamaToy1997 can check the '010 to make sure it is the same 14-pin connector.

    BamaToy1997- thanks for the reply

I got the mirror from a wreck 2010 Taco, from a salvage/junk yard. so I can't really provide a wiring diagram for it. I think the only thing I can provide is the model number for the mirror: Gentex-651. that's what I'm afraid of, burning something off in my truck. the only thing that went wrong is that I blew a fuse down on the junction box on the driver side. of course I replaced it.

tried to buy the connectors from that same wreck Taco, but they said they don't want to cut it apart just for that particular part. so I skipped on that. so I just ran my own wiring to make it easier on myself.

yes, I'm pretty certain those are the wires coming from the mirror. no white wires. the closes to white looking wire is that peach looking wire(2nd wire from the left on that pic on post #1). unless the Tacoma wasn't a 2010, maybe an 09, I don't know??? but I'm pretty sure it's wasn't an 11 cause it didn't have that updated honey comb grille.

-big thanks again for helping me out

Perhaps you could go back to the junk yard and ask them if you can take a look at the truck again. Then using a pad and pen mark down on the connector what color wire is in what terminal (Using Taco09's above post) and maybe we can help out more. I don't think any of us want you to burn up anything and the more info, the better. I need you to clarify something for us. In your opening post photo you said:
What exactly are those wires coming from then if you don't have the harness from the 2010 truck? are those the wires from YOUR truck?

Could you retake some photos that show where that bunch of wires goes to?

    adio,

The '09 schematic shows the wire colors and their respective pin locations. The schematic shows that only 7 of the 14 spaces on the mirror connector are occupied as follows.

    - Light Green Wire runs from 10A IG1 fuse to pin location no. 1 on the mirror connector.

    - White Wire with a Black Tracer is a ground and runs to pin location no. 2 on the mirror connector.

    - On of the Red Wires runs from the Park/Neutral Position Switch to pin location no. 3 on the mirror connector.

    - Plain White Wire runs from the camera to pin no. 6 on the mirror connector.

    - The other Red Wire runs from the camera to pin no. 7 on the mirror connector

    - Lavender Wire starts at camera and then becomes shielded and runs to pin no. 13 of the mirror connector.

    - Black Wire runs from camera to pin no. 14 at the mirror connector.

Additional thoughts: your Post No. 1 shows a bunch of wires that sort of look like they have male terminals attached. The mirror connector is a female connector and the wires will have female terminals attached. What's with the male terminals? There also seems to be way to many wires as mine only has 7 that enter the mirror connector as mentioned in the first paragraph of this post.

BamaToy-1997- those wires are coming from the mirror. they use to be in 14 pin plug, but as you can see there's only 12 wires(I hope that makes sense). I took off that plug because I want to directly tap into them, plus I don't have that female flug that connects to it(that's why I'm running my own wires). I'll take some pics ASAP.

Taco'09- like I said those wires are coming from the mirror. there's only one red, one black, one blue, no white wire.

and the wires from the camera are red, white, black and blue.

I'm not sure if that helps at all.
