Hey everyone. New guy here. I have searched and read about the Lurch due to the A/C coming on, etc. Experienced it, keep my foot hard on the brake when stopped (especially at crosswalks) because of it. Don't even notice it anymore, really... No big deal.

Anyway, I'm posting because I have (what I think is) a related issue that may be exacerbated by my tendency to drive aggressively at times.

    So:
    1) When I'm coming to a stop I get the rear end thud that has been described as the tranny downshifts catching up to you.
    2) I also experience the rear end thud that feels like you got tapped by the car behind you intermittently.

I think 2) is more related to my issue with my '05 access cab with 57K on it.

    So, my issue:

When I stop or almost stop and then jump on the throttle quickly, but smoothly, after taking my foot off the brake, it's almost like there is a disconnect in the drive train somewhere. The the engine revs but the power isn't being transferred to the rear wheels for about a half a second or so, then, something reconnects and it is usually a very abrupt snap that sends the back wheels a spinning (unless I've taken my foot off the gas cause I'm sensing something is wrong). If I kept on the gas, I get traction and then everything is fine again...until next time. Not really any regularity to it happening. Sometimes, I do a quick, stop/start and the truck responds just how you think it would...
I used to think it only happened when everything wasn't all the way warmed up, but it has happened after long drives as well.

So I guess what I'm looking for here is a solution and/or empathy.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

Empathy only Ryan. The real solution.....get you a 6 speed manual and do your own shifting. The reality is that these are computer driven automatics and they are programmed to conform to the EPA model for max mileage. Sometimes they just can't "think" as fast as you want to act and it takes awhile for the "mechanicals" to catch up to what you are requesting it to do.....if that makes any sense. I also think the tranny holds onto 2nd gear thinking you may continue in a normal manner and then you jam the accelerator and it has to "rethink".....this is all EPA driven trying to maxmize mileage....IMHO.

I have had manual transmissions all of my life. I thought I was treating myself when I bought an auto Honda Element and the shifting in that car absolutely drove me nuts!!! This auto is waaaaaaaayyyyyy better than that one but it does still have some similar characteristics....like the lurching. If I coulda got a DC 4.o with a 6 speed, I woulda been all over it....but no such critter. This transmission is fairly decent....but make no mistake, it's primary mission is to mold itself to the EPA model that the numbers represent on your window sticker. Maybe a chip/programmer to reprogram the shift points and overall how the tranny acts.....I honestly have no clue as to what is out there in this regard. I am basing that suggestion on previous cars I have owned.

I would imagine the scan rate for whatever programming is managing the shift characteristics "thinks" fast enough. It didn't always shift like this. Used to respond instantly...

Just reading what you wrote (and not really thinking about it before) I think it must be something "mechanical" that needs to be put back in adjustment/spec or lubed or something...

Wonder if it could be something as dumb as adjustment of the rear brakes as LRH said:

    I'm still thinking about it...

Thanks for the quick replies, everyone!

TBH, I think Toyota should start a TSB for all auto trans from day 1 for those that want to eliminate the lurch issue. I'd drop down to 16mpg if I could get it to stop that crap.

Can't say there's been a disconnect in my auto.... if I slam it down it'll respond by pealing out my new BFG All Terrains (well one of them at least) in the rear. Gotta love torque :D

I had the issue you are talking about and its the driveshaft. Have them replace it and it will go away. It has something to do with the driveline slip-joint. Mine would have a thump AFTER coming to a stop and immediatly upon the stop. They replaced the drive shaft and its fine now.

Now if only I could get my vibration fixed when deacclerating from 30-20 and the intermittent jolting shifts, usuallyl from 1-2.

Did they replace this under powertrain or would it be covered under the powertrain warranty?

After 56,000 miles of normal driving on pavement, no lift, stock wheels and tires, my U-bolts came off BY HAND. After torquing them down to 85ft. lbs, the axle wrap went away.
