I was changing my oil about a week ago and I came up with an idea that I'd like to share with you all. I'm sure at some point in time, we've all had to deal with universal funnels that don't fit quite right into the fill spout. I'm going to show you how to make your own funnel for your Tacoma that will thread right into the fill spout. This works on the 4.0L. Not positive on the 2.7L though. All you need is (1) an empty screw top style windshield washer fluid bottle (or one similar to it) and (2) a razor knife.

WARNING: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES CAUSED BY OR AS A RESULT OF THE USE OF THIS METHOD! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

First, you'll need an empty bottle. I chose to use an empty bottle of Mr. Moto bike wash (since I had one lying around :p), however a screw top windshield washer fluid bottle should work the same:

    15D7C787-A455-4776-BB13-1C53D6B5AFA1-423_f5b3f072301214bd897064afc7112310d002216b.jpg

Next, carefully cut off the top of the bottle using your razor knife:

Congratulations! You now have your finished product! ***IMPORTANT*** Make sure that the inside of the bottle top (funnel) is clean and all debris and loose plastic is removed before use!!:

Your funnel is now ready to use!! Remove the top cap from the bottle and set aside. Unscrew the the oil fill cap and tread the bottle top on to the fill spout:

That's it!!! You now have a completely stable funnel. After filling is complete, simply unscrew and put the top cap back on the bottom of the funnel and store for next time. Enjoy!!!

It appears to say JL audio. Someone has special a sound system they don't want to blow up.

Good idea. I've always cut the first Mobil 1 bottle that I pour in, but you gotta get the first one poured in first. The threads fit fairly well that way too.

It's a JL audio battery terminal. I converted all my power and ground wire to 1.0 gauge (Big 3 upgrade) and needed them to attach the new wire.

    This.

and I keep the cut bottle wrapped in a shop towel (to keep dust and dirt off) for the next change. That way I don't have to worry about the "first one" issue.

Agreed. That first pour sucks lol. another great thing about using this method is that the plastic bottle being as soft as it is, will in no way ever damage the treads on the fill spout.

Great idea indeed. How did you happen onto the right size bottle that would fit the threads, does anyone have recommendations for a specific product or brand with a bottle the correct size?

I used an empty bottle of Mr. Moto Bike wash from Cycle Gear. I believe that most all screw top jugs similar to this will work great. I'd be interested to hear which one you all try to see what works and what doesnt.

Nice idea using the windshield washer bottle. Several others have been using the quart oil bottles the same way. It is another testament to the forward thinking of the engineers over at Toyota. They could have made the thread size anything they wanted to.

the only change from the OP's that I'd do is trim the cut line with a nice sharp knife. I suspect that was cut with a saw and has left little hairs that could fall in. Unlikely, but easy to do.
