Another member, who happens to be a master tech for Toyota, posted a tsb for the drum brake squeal. I just dropped my truck off to have it done. T-SB-0236-12
    They redesigned the drum shoes.

I had bad squeal on my 09. I replaced my rotors and pads it still squealed... slow speeds coming to a stop. Last weekend I pulled the drums and gave them a good cleaning... ahhh silence.

Might wanna check to see if they are just dirty.

    Did it eliminate the noise?

The dealer called me and said it would take a week to get all the parts. I have to bring it back at the end of the week but I will post results after its done. The link above has the post with the pdf on the tsb

I called my dealership and told them about the TSB. They ordered the parts and I had the work completed on Saturday. I've only driven the truck once since then, but the squeal is gone now.:D
Thanks Trucky for sharing the TSB.

I didn't read all comments, but I figured I would add my experience. I also have a 2011, and around the same mile mark, my wife noticed that my rear brakes would squeal and sound "junky." The noise always went away after the brakes warmed up. I asked the dealership about it when I was there for one of the complimentary oil changes, and the service writer told me that was common with drum brakes and that there was nothing I (or they) could do about it. I now have 30k (as of yesterday) and I don't notice that squealing anymore. I might hear it occasionally, but it's never very loud or very often. It always goes away once they get warmed up.

Took the truck back to the dealer and this time went with the mechanic to test it out. The brakes have continued to make the squeal but not so prominent with the mech..

Back at the dealer I let them know that I had a claim in with Toyota about the brakes and also had with me the TSB (thanks TruckyTruck) that I shared with the mechanic and service rep.

They agreed to do the TSB and ordered the required parts. I have an appointment back at the dealer this Friday to have the work done. The friendlyguy from Toyota customer Care happened to call again today asking about the issue. Since I first made the official complaint with Toyota he has been most diligent about seeing this through. He requested to call me back next week as a follow-up.

NOTE: In that I had notified the dealer well over a year ago about thesquealing (as identified in a previous service request) I believe that lent credibilityto my claim.

Though it has taken awhile, I am still convinced that Toyota still does more for its customers then most other manufactures :)

My 05 tacoma trd off road started doing exactly the same thing around 100k, squeals on low speeds almost as if it is rubbing against something. Resurfaced the rotors and replaced the pads and still the same issue continued. Cant seem to find a solution to my problem but if somebody has a recommendation or solution pls let me know. If in case I find one i will post it as soon as possible

Dealer ordered the parts and did the job - took about 1.5hrs. my 2010 is still under warrantyw/20k miles. Even though tsb onlycovered 2011-2012 years the dealer & Toyota agreed to do the brakes. I think that's the 3rd tsb I’ve had done(brakes, leaf springs and cabin fan motor). I'm only sorry the hunting season ended just when I got the brakesdone. Better late than never. :)

I have a 2010 and it does the same annoying thing. Problem is I am out of warranty. Wonder if I call Toyota and complain if they can do something regardless.

Ok just had my brakes replaced $1,350 later they started to squeal when backing up, now they are doing it randomly at low and high speed. Will try the driving and making several 45 kph to rapid stops and check it out (supposedly to wear off factory oil?)
My other problem is that now when I'm stopped at traffic lights, and move ahead slowly, there is a strange rattling/grinding noise from under the dash as I brake or release the brake, it lasts about 2 - 3 seconds, as if something is slowly releasing - is there any pump or cylinder assist that could be sticking???
It may happen at higher speed braking, but I don't hear it.
    Any ideas?.

Dumb question - what does the acronym TSB stand for? Is it some kind of recall that I could follow up with Toyota for my 2006 Tacoma? still get a squeal when backing out of the driveway in the morning, otherwise there is no other time when it happens. And if it is a recall does it matter that I had the brakes done outside of the Toyota shop, because I couldn't get a second mortgage to pay for Toyota OEM parts?
    Cheers,
