Colinb17's kinda sorta build thread - now with 4-link and long travel

just ordered two of these. should suit me well for now.
cheap, but since the trailer isn't a daily driver, they should hold up fine.

 

I have those lights on my truck right now. I bought a couple to test out as engine bay lights and they worked pretty well so I bought four more as rock lights. Decided four weren't going to be enough so I bought two more so I could run three on each side of my truck. One by the front wheel, one in the center and one by the rear wheel on each side. I'm still not sure if I like it but that may just be because of how I mounted them. They light up plenty in line with my frame and shoot out a tiny bit but along the center of my truck is still dark. That's my fault with how I mounted them

 

where did you mount them? i'm more concerned with lighting up just in front and behind the tires, so myself or a spotter can see what will imediately affect the truck. i figure if anything more is needed, the spotter can go oldschool and use a flashlight

 

Everywhere but behind/in front hahahha. Looks like I'll have to maybe add another. I was already planning on adding two more in the rear since my lights in my rear bumper don't light up jack shit anyways. I'll have to play around and add more it looks like.

 

oh, i see. mine are going in the wheel wells. larry had pretty good results with small halogen floods in the wheel wells. probably have them just in front of the centerline of the hub, so i get a litle more on the front of the tire

 

Yeah, that makes a lot more sense. For some reason I was thinking my PIAA fogs would light up enough in front that I didn't need them in my wheel wells. I'm starting to realize that I'd save a lot of time and money if I actually think before I buy stuff and start throwing it on my truck.

 

happens to all of us. had i realized that earlier, i would have gotten a nice CB fromt he start instead of yanking my second broken (cheap) cobra out of the truck earlier this evening

 

got a decent angle of the new suspension while the trailer was sitting on it's ass


got the new CB installed last night. awesome unit! so many features, and all of them seem to be useful. couldn't quite get it installed where i wanted because of the ac duct behind the forward cubby in the center console. I'll look into it more in the future when i have more time and maybe cut the part out and reroute if needed so i can get a flusher mount. the other option is to trim my dash and get it really cleanly mounted in the cubby jsut above my head unit that the sunglasses are in.

i just used the bracket it comes with and ran two screws into the plastic by the 12v outlet. same as how i had the last on mounted. i can take a side shot tomorrow to show you.

 

Could do this too..extend the wires from the face plate.


What we are doing to my dads. Would probably be easier for yours too as it's not all individual wire.

Then mount it where you have but just farther back.

that's a great option. mounting possibilities are endless if you do that. i'm pretty busy until lat february, but that may be the way to take it when i get the time. you remember about how many wires you had to lengthen? you could always splice into a plug, so that if you ever wanted to go back to normal, instead or coiling up all of those wires, you could just inplug the extension and replug the faceplate to the unit.

 

Well this is a cobra 29 ltd..so bit different. But took about 6 cat5 cables..so..like 50 or more.

Your could be different though. Could be much less wires as its an LCD and will have a pcb board with all the buttons right behind it..so could be different

 

that's what i was thinking (fingers crossed). it'd be nice to crack it open and see some power wires and a couple signal wires, with all of the control wiring being directly connected to the a panel on the faceplate.........but things are never that easy

on the other hand, a couple hours of stripping and soldering can be theraputic sometimes.
