    No problem -- I'll stop. :)

I was brought up Roman Catholic, went through all the sacraments through confirmation, etc. I was actually hoping to see some discussion like this come up.

Marriage has even less to do with religion than modern-day Christmas. If gay marriage is outlawed based on religious beliefs, why can that same government not be allowed to display a Nativity scene? The hypocrisy is what is most problematic. People cannot have it both ways no matter how much they complain.

So, separation of church and state. No Nativity scene, so it stands to reason that the issue with gay marriage cannot be based in religion. My question is this: What is the issue? Seriously.

Morality is a moving target. Legislating religious beliefs is a scary thing. If nobody is being hurt, what is the issue? People will say that we need inter-gender marriage for procreation, and they're right. But the beauty of this is that free will still exists. The law doesn't say that you're going to be forced to marry a dude. Be happy and allow others to do the same.

Right on for standing up for your beliefs and speaking up. It makes for good conversation!

I struggle with my religious beliefs every day. I attend 3+hours of Bible study each week and I have come to respect and understand Christianity each day as well. It is not a religion you can just understand completely without study....it really needs to be studied in the context of history, cultures, etc. The old testament is full of blood, murder, sexual indiscretions...it is the story of man and his struggle to find rules on how to live and meaning in life. The message of Christ is "right".

The Muslims (and I'm not talking about the extremists here) feel the same way about Muhammad and how he lived his life. Were you brought up in a different culture there's a very solid chance that your beliefs would be different.

At what age does it become too late to influence one's beliefs, and why does that happen?

I'm gonna have to dissagree with you on that one. Marriage is not a necessity of procreation. In this day and age, intercourse is not even a necessity of procreation.

Christianity is not a religion of intolerance, and Muslims believe that Jesus was an important Prophet. In fact, there are probably many more similarities in the two religions than differences. There are people that convert both ways (see this months Nat'l Geographic and read about all the Christians in Syria, Lebanon, etc. - many more than you would ever have guessed!) Christianity is above all else a religion of action, of doing good. But it requires that you believe in Him and do your best to understand and follow him. I have not read or been exposed to anyone in history like him. One of the greatest things he did for me was to take away my fear of death. As I mentioned earlier, I struggle with evangelizing, and I don't mean to.....it's just a topic I love to discuss and try to understand better. I don't try to defend Christianity for myself, but the people I know in the faith are the finest I have ever known. There are those in my Discipleship and Bible study class that are perfectly OK with homosexual rights, but they do struggle with it as well. Christ embraces ALL of His Father's children.

Trust me when I say I'm all for the recreation of procreation and more often than not, just the recreation. I've already procreated and in the interest of population control and self sanity maintenance, I am done procreating.

Thanks dude, it means a lot that you don't just jump back in my face with some craziness. I REALLY appreciate it! For me, my view of morality does not move, it is completely black and white. Does that mean that I always do what I think is right? Absolutely not! I have free will to do as I choose and sometimes I choose to do things the wrong way, so I pray for forgiveness and the bible says that I'm forgiven. Simple as that. For me to try and FORCE you to do things the way I think they should be done is as much a sin as cheating on my wife as far as I'm concerned. That doesn't mean however that if I have a choice to vote on whether or not to allow gay marriage that I would vote to allow it. It is IMPOSSIBLE to legislate morality, all I can do is vote my conscience. It seems to me that we as a country are at a crossroads and where we go from here will be along the lines of what I believe or we will go in the complte opposite direction. The only thing I can do is stand up and say what I believe, things might not and probably won't go the way I wish but that's all I can do. Again, thanks for being considerate:).

the point that I took away from mjp's comment was that religious values are very strongly related to your culture. Very few people start with a clean slate when they are mature and well educated before they start making religious decisions. How is it that some muslims are able to encourage suicide bombers with promises of a bunch of virgins greeting them in Heaven?

Probably much the same way David Koresh did it in Waco. Any religion can be distorted to serve purposes other than what Christ intended. Evil takes many forms.

And that is why I don't trust any religion. There are too many vested interests for people to be impartial.

Really thoughtful responses here. I especially like Pster's because he does a good job of explaining his religious thoughts. That's hard to do and I can respect that.

Me personally, I kind of feel that about 99% of all people regardless of background are decent people. There's a gay couple down the street from me. They keep the yard clean and have well-behaved, polite children. On the other hand there's a couple down the street who's children go nuts all the freakin time. I tend to judge by action and when I see good people, they're fine in my book. Perhaps I don't totally agree with how they live. I'm sure MANY think the same of me as well. That's their opinion. It's not their to tell me how to live, and that's my whole problem with this issue in general. I put myself in their shoes. How would I feel if someone was telling me I couldn't do something because it was against their morals even though I might not share their beliefs? That's the point of contention here.

Anyway, as far as religion in concerned, if there is a supreme being who made us in his/her image, than they're obviously a lot smarter than us. I also expect that we were made to use our own god-given brains to make decisions for ourselves to help ourselves.

i think you hit the nail on the head with this selection....

its a story about how things came and how to live w/o a real explaination. look at all the things ther have been proven wrong by science and even just time. romans and greeks did this w/ all of their different gods. only thing is the bible simplifies it to 3 entities instead of hundreds
