Feeler: Custom Grill Emblem

I got word from the fab guy, Ryan, that he will join TW so he can answer any question directly and provide better insight without filtering through me first.

He also asked that we keep in mind that there's a lot of design time that goes into these. Making sure all of the letters work, and that the overall proportions will fit, etc... The fabricating is the easy part. Also that we're getting a fully customized piece that we can't just buy at the store.

He can also do much more than just initials. He could conceivably put anything into that oval. Skull and crossbones, american flag, anything. That could increase the price a little but just something to keep in mind. This will also be noted in the group buy thread.

Hey Everyone- I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm the fabricator who made Chris' custom emblem for him. I told Chris that I'd join the forums to answer any questions you guys might have about getting your own custom emblems.

To answer some of the questions above about custom graphics in emblems (as opposed to just the initials direction that I did for Chris), I'm actually an Illustrator and Graphic Designer in addition to being a fabricator, so yes, I'd say really anything goes on these. Anything you guys can dream up, I should be able to help you execute it.

Chris had also mentioned that I can do double layered pieces as well, which is absolutely true. That said, if any of you guys have an idea of something a little different you'd like to try to achieve, please post your idea and I'll help you flush your idea out.

I'll post more info as questions come in, but I just wanted to introduce myself and get a dialogue going with you guys.

I'm still trying to work out group pricing and it's kind of hard because 90% of my process is in the design of the pieces. Not only making them look awesome, but getting the proportions right so they fit your trucks, etc etc... Each piece will be different as far as how long it'll take to design, so What I'm thinking I'll do is, I'll set up a standard tiered pricing structure as it relates to material, setup fees, laser time, and shipping. Then I'll quote each piece out individually as it relates to design fees. More to come on that.

I'll check in later tonight and answer any questions you guys have posted.

Hey Ryan. Awesome work so far. What type of materials are you able to offer?

 

Hey rtrudel35- I work mainly with high-grade plastics. When going through the process of making Chris' piece, I actually sampled it out in a few different materials at the beginning and ended up settling on a high-grade 1/8" (but it's a bit thicker than 1/8") acrylic plastic due to a couple recommendations from my material suppliers. The nice thing about acrylic is that you can keep it thin (if you want to) and it remains amazingly strong. In addition, it's a bit flexible too, which is nice and will prevent it from ever really cracking. The best part about it is the way it cuts on the laser. You can cut really intricate design details into it and it handles them really well and gives you a beautiful finished product.

So yeah, I would definitely recommend acrylic for these pieces. Really affordable, super durable, paints really nicely, etc...

What about trademarked logos?

 

Hey xmadcowx- That's a bit of a slippery slope, but there is also a bit of grey area there. A lot of it depends on how the logo is depicted and used. I'll look a little more into that and get back to you.
