If the MAF calibrator compensates for the factory richness, does the possibility exist that it could make things too lean and potentially burn-up the top end?

OP, sorry for hijacking! To throw a bone, I've owned both the Volant (w/out the scoop) and now the TRD (1st gen) CAIs. Only difference I noticed b/w the two is noise - the Volant was slightly louder when stomping the gas. No difference in MPG, and neither ever threw any codes or check engine lights.

I would assume improper tuning may cause issues, im not sure if a knock sensor would catch it and do its job or not tho.

Id call gadget for that answer :(

    Justus is on his game.

A couple things to note, which point to why the Gen 1 TRD and current AFe intakes are so good. They have a proper transition from the very large air filter (which also has a velocity stack to improve air flow while reducing turbulence) to the throttle body. While also being the proper size I.D. at the MAF sensor, that there isn't any turbulence across the MAF and it gets accurate grams per second reading based on it stock calibration of tubing I.D.

Not all other intake companies have them nearly as accurate/precise as those listed prior. Some are much worse then others.

The MAF Cal has since been explained properly, so all I will say is that it is an optimization tool over overly rich factory settings. As well as can clean up some MAF signals.

There are graphs posted with multiple mods. Some with a very few. Look through those. Power comes easy on the 1GR. It responds well to the proper intakes.

Just remember, the Maf cal does work in closed loop as well. I just wanted to reiterate that.

As well, after mods like an intake, it is always best to disconnect your battery for about 20-30 minutes. Probably doesn't actually take that long, but just for good measure. What that will do is reset the ecu, so it will have to learn new base files with the new intake. That, is how it will optimize itself.

Correct, I forgot about the battery, actually you have to, the engine may run really rough when you first fire it

So to a dullard like me, would the URD MAF calibrator be worthwhile or would it simply be wasted $$$? (My mods include the 1st gen TRD CAI and TRD cat-back.)

Edit: Yes, I've done the battery disconnect procedure several times over the 6+ years I've had an intake on the truck (Volant and now TRD). I just didn't know if the ECU could compensate enough for my mods, or if the MAF calibrator is warranted in my situation. I hate to unnecessarily spend money, but I also want my rig to operate to its optimal potential.

Wow, this is some great info. So basically the only GOOD cai systems to get are the afe or the urd, and I may or may not see limited benefits to the mag calibrater if I only commute. Is the afe really annoyingly loud, or just louder than stock? I had an FIPK on my old 1st gen four banger and it was just right, not too loud and not too soft. I would think one of the closed box systems would be quieter than that, right?

My MPG went up a little after I installed the AFE on my stock '09. The thing was so annoying loud that I babied the throttle so I did not have to listen to it. First time my wife rode with me she said "What the Hell is that?!" I went back to stock and had the same performance, less noise, normal MPG. I'm keeping my '12 stock. Well maybe a TRD supercharger some day ;)

I don't think that the closed box intakes are that loud at all. That is just one man's opinion though. Best bet is to see if you can find someone on the forum near you that has an intake on, which you are interested in. Then take a ride along. Then you can hear first hand.

She definitely won't hear that one. ;)

This is some good information. Of note, it does not include a mention "CAI" or cold air intake. It does talk toward the improved flow charactoristics and proper measurement of air mass. These are far more important than a few degrees of temperature.

Yeah, "loud" is a tough one to quantify since loud, like style, is very subjective and each person is different. Personally, I took an aFe Stage II off due to the noise it made at about 1500-2000. Not loud, but to me, very annoying. I also took a TRD catback off since this "quiet" system had too much drone for me. Again, very subjective. Torspd's recommendation is on though, try and find a ride-along, or do as I normally do, be patient, watch for a good used price to come along, then if you don't like 'em, you can at least get your money back.

From someone who recently installed the URD intake along with the maf cal, it was well worth it. My truck pulls significantly harder throughout pretty much the entire powerband. I was skeptical at first, but I was very pleased with the performance I gained. Plus the sound that intake makes at WOT :taco:

About how much $ is it for a urd intake and maf cal?

I guess I'll answer my own questions in a little while, just found a good deal on a Volant system. It looks basically the same as the afe/1st gen trd so I hope it works well, if not it won't be the first time I've bought something for the truck that I ended up not using and I'm sure it won't be the last.
