Hey guys, I recently bought an 06 tacoma with 59k miles on it, double cab, 4x4, trd sport. On the way home (4 hour trip, noticed it the whole trip, and when I test drove it, but didnt think much of it because it was a new car to me so I was thinking it was kinda normal) Anyways, there is a humming/rumbling noise coming from up front. Happens at basically 10 mph and above. When I turn right slightly, aka putting weight on the left side of the truck it goes away. That would tell me its the drivers side? I will jack it up when I go home from spring break to further diagnose it, currently a school right now.

So a couple questions, from what I described it sounds like a wheel bearing correct? How long can I drive on it? Im going to replace it myself, so do you guys recommend getting just the bearing and taking it somewhere to get the old one pressed out and the new one pressed in, or buying the whole hub assembly with the bearing in it?

I am going to drive it in a straight line with 4x4 hi on just to make sure it is still making the noise, eliminating the differential bearing possibility.

    Thanks guys

    Tough break.
If it is the bearing, when it starts clicking you probably wont get 100 km out of it.
I had a hum on one for months before it went. My other one just started clicking and siezed after about 100km.
With the prize of bearings and hub it will cost an arm and a leg for the assembly.
Its different here but, 250 for bearing and 250 for hub from the dealership.
I found a bearing for 120 but I couldnt find a hub other than at the dealership.

I've not had to do this yet so I'll bow out. I'm sure someone will be along shortly with much more knowledge on this.

I did this myself a few weeks ago. This link ^ gives you step by step disassembly and reassembly instructions. If your truck has ABS make sure your new part is for ABS vehicle or you'll wind up with an ABS fault and an inoperative ABS system. Take care not to damage the ABS sensor mounted in the knuckle (very expensive). You'll see it as you're taking things apart. Replace the seal under the hub and the o-ring that seals the bearing assembly to the knuckle. Make sure you torque the axle shaft nut to specs and install the cotter pin. I believe the spec is 173 ft.lbs. of torque. Always support the vehicle properly with jack stands and not just by the jack. Good luck.

Thanks guys. My brother and I both go to va tech and he is an engineering major so he has access to the ware lab that has a bearing press in it. I just found this out! Will save me money for sure. Any tips for pressing the old one out and putting the new one in? I don't want to damage anything else further.

    1. Go to the local HW store, Home depot or Lowes and pick up a 1-1/2" to 3" PVC adapter to drive the seal onto the bearing housing. Fits over the seal perfectly.
    2. Put the mounting bolts in the housing before you press in the wheel hub.
    3. Keep fingers out of the way.
    4. Wear safety glasses.
When you press out the wheel hub from the old bearing the inner bearing race will probably stay on the wheel hub. With the right adapters you won't have any trouble removing it.
Let us know how you make out.

Ok, so the PVC is just used to put the seal on easier? This may sound like a dumb question, but the press my brother will be using should have different size adapters right? That's standard for presses I'm assuming?
    Thanks

Hey man, so my 2nd wheel bearing has just gone out. I replaced my passenger side awhile back after it started humming, then making a weird "rotating pottery table" noise and finally started making sounds like a small dog barking at me (metal on metal).

When I did I was out in texas visiting friends so I was limited on supplies and resources but I did research and through the help of some friends got it done.

    Here's what you gotta do:
Start wrenching on your truck, take a part your hub assembly so that you have just the hub and wheel bearing (they will be together)

With the hub and bearing, go to autzone and get a new bearing, then somewhere like a PEP BOYS that has a 20ton bearing press.

It cost me $35 to get it pressed but you have to have a professional machine do it, theirs no way around it.

Once I got that new bearing pressed on the hub, i went back to my truck, threw it on and everything's been working great since.
Now the other side has gone lol

One thing I think you should know is when I took it apart there were these funny looking seals that were made of like a long spring. I haven't replaced those because I didn't know where to find them at the time. If you have time, try to find them. They may be on that rock auto site.

Im including the thread I followed for taking everything apart.

If there's any way I can help, lemme know
    -Brad (714)-271-6179

P.S. if you do the work yourself make sure you have a 35mm socket for the axle nut.
Good luck...now to get started on mine.

that should make things easier.. Should press right out as you would press it in

thanks Brad! Appreciate it. I can buy just the bearing right? I won't need the bearing assembly? Obviously just the bearing is cheaper. I plan on buying the 35mm socket, some grease, seals and a bearing when I go to advanced auto( can't wait on shipping as I am going home for spring break soon) I think that covers everything.
    Thanks again

Cool man, I understand with your urgency. I was in the same boat!
The link you provided is just a hub, I also made this mistake before.
What you want is the solid silver round wheel bearing that goes inside of it.
You don't need to buy another hub unless that bearing chewed up the inside of your old one.

When you do buy the bearing... If you play around with it while you're in the check out line like I did, don't be alarmed if it comes apart and you see all the goop and rolly balls inside. LOL
I was like "uhhh is this fucking broken"
Turns out the whole thing gets sealed together when it's pressed. :D

Okay hey wait a minute. Are you a prerunner?
That does make a difference here.
If you're a 4WD you need the spline thingy that goes in the middle of that bearing/hub. Or else your front axles will just be turning nothing!

There's something Im missing or forgetting here. I think they just take the spline out of your old one and put it in that new one. Hmm.. Lemme see what else i can dig up here.

OH BTW I think that dealership owes you man. Within 4 hours of owning it you already find something wrong? Shit man, they need to take care of that. Or compensate you!

Yeah I'm 4x4. Are you talking about the cv axle? Also, I just jacked up my truck and spun each of my front wheels and checked for looseness in the bearing by grabbing the top of the tire and the bottom and trying to wiggle it. Neither of them seemed bad, it was hard to tell. Someone else's thread described exactly what I am hearing though so I know it's a wheel bearing. And when I turn to the right the noise stops which makes me feel like its drivers side wheel bearing which is exactly what some other guy experienced so I think I'm just going to replace the drivers side and hope that's it
