I've had mine scangauge II mounted on my steering column with double-sided tape. The problem I have with it is that is sits just too high to where I can't see the dash advisory lights. I've been wanted to do this for awhile, so I made a more permanent mount and recessed it into the steering column plastic shell. I also put a slight tilt backward, with full access to buttons.

Cut the hole with a dremel... just wide enough so it's a tight fit. Also a notch for the RJ45 cable and mount screw that holds the bracket. Made from steel I had lying around and bent on a vise.

Double sided tape to hold in place but can remove easily if needed. Not much else to say. Easy to do and took about 30 minutes.

I've seen so many different scangauge setups from blendmounts, to double sided sticky tape, to fitting under the headunit or cigar trays on the 3rd gen 4runners and 1st gen Tacos that I would have to say that is one of the best (perfect sight) and cleanest (wire is hidden) DIY setups I have seen in a while! Very well done! :)

Thanks, I appreciate the compliment. I got it tweaked now so that it visually falls just under the dash advisory lights... I'm real happy with it. I love my scangauge and now love the way it looks in my Taco.

    Thanks man.

Here's a night shot... just about how I see it from driver's angle.

One cable... That's it. Plugs right into the OBDII port under the dash, by your right knee. You should give consideration to Ultragauge as well, as it is cheaper. It is hard to argue with the cost savings, but SG does give Trans Temp via X-gauge, variable colors, and some say a better refresh rate. Also, I think the more compact design works better if mounted well. You can decide for yourself what you want. I've had my SG for many years and have no problem with it. I don't even think UG was around when I bought mine SG.

You are right on the UG although the UG has a superior way of monitoring fuel usage. I think what the UG doesn't have going for it is the lack of scanning trans temp (I used to own a UG) making the SG worth more for me. Monitoring trans temp is a MUST when I'm hauling heavy crap. As they say, heat is transmissions worst enemy.

How did you get the SG color to match the dash's factory orange lights? It looks like a perfect match! Did you mod your SG? The closest I can get my SG is the yellow side of orange.

for what its worth, the ultra gauge frequently would trigger an ABS blinking light for me in my 04. I was told it was just like a test mode, but regardless..

That ABS blinking light issue that you're talking about is the same with the Scangauge. The folks at Scangauge sent me a separate modified cable that doesn't include the extra pin that causes the test mode triggering the ABS blinking light issue. What sucks with the UG is the cable is fixed to the unit so you don't even have the ability to swap cables. Another plus for SG!

That's actually not factory... I did a red LED install after one off my instrument backlights burnt out. The SG is full red and you are right, it is a good match. When I did have stock instrument cluster, the orange setting of SG was not a good match (too light imo) and so I still kept the SG at red.

I don't think you'll go wrong with the SG, I just wanted to make sure you knew about the UG. For me, the blue display limit would be an UG deal breaker. You would think the SG would have dropped the price when the UG came out because of competition, but they haven't. They must be still generating enough sales. SG does it enjoy a good reputation and I guess there is enough difference between the two.
