Thanks for the input tacomated, it's my daily driver and the wife and I plan to camp out of the bed after we figure out what design of sleep platform we are going to build (that would be why I'm going with a above the cab design.) Will be putting 2 kayaks on the roof also. I should be placing the order within the next two weeks.

So I am about to install a roof rack on my topper. I have the kind that has the rails that allow the bars to slide forward or backwards....Can anyone verify for me that they actually bolt through the "plywood" reenforcement on the Leer topper? Or do they bolt on the outside edge of them?

Oh wow. I thought you had a 4 cylinder cause of the rims on your truck when you bought it new.

I have the same rims on my 4 cylinder and my tires are 245/75/16. On the fence about staying with stock size but I'm leaning heavily towards it.

    Thanks for letting me know.

I have an email into Snug Top asking the exact same question. My local Snug Top dealer said to make sure I bolt it through the reinforced (my honeycomb) part, but everything I have read said to bolt the rack outside of this section as the middle section can break when you are trying to torque the bolts down. In other words, I have no idea.

Don't know what you're looking for in a sleeping platform but there are a couple of good designs that take advantage of the molded ridges about 9" up the side of the bed.

Cheap to make. Easy to take in and out if you need to haul in your truck. Leaves maximum free space under the platform for storage.

If you're interested check out these posts:

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/13598-show-me-your-shell-55.html#post5666251

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...mple-sleeping-platform-cheap-works-great.html

I did a modified version of warrenh's platform with just a center support using the rv step supports, two 6' pieces of 1x8 and 1/2" ply. Dadoed the lower piece so it rests in the grooves of the bed. Works great.

If you're really handy and want the Taj Mahal of sleeping platforms, take a look at this:

Hope you figure out exactly what will work best for you.

    Shady,
I have the LEER 100 XQ on my 2012 DCLB, The small bolts do go all the way thru, and have a black cap covering the nut on the inside. I can take pix later and send them to you if you like.

    Love my rack system.
    Good luck

My new A.R.E. CX. I did not see any Flaws on this shell, and they did one hell of a job with the paint. I got the tilt slider, Free headliner, single latch rear window, and fishing rod holders. I wanted the Racks, but I can install that on the cab later.

It was pretty much the budget. The shell was 1600. The racks would of made it over budget. I was working with my tax return.

I was inches of getting the MX. But I am happy with my CX. She's going to make a great camping top.

I look at a CX. Plus you got the long bed and that would make a great sleeper.

Could you take a picture please? I know they go through, just wanted to know if they go through the reenforced part, or the outside edge....

You can see the black covers on the bolts in this picture. My rack was factory installed so I'm hoping this is correct. ;)

The bolts come through about 1 1/2" toward center from the outer edge of the reinforced (thicker) section of the roof.

My shell is a Leer but it's a 122 so construction might be a bit different.

Tacomated: Man that is a sweet setup. I love that platform with storage underneath. Exactly what I'm hoping to do one day. . Looks great.
