My Sub and Amp Install 2005 Access Cab

Box design credit goes to Chadderkdawg. My box was inspired by his posts showing his stuff and many thanks for sharing Chad!

I had previously installed a Kenwood DNX 6140 Head unit and Pioneer door speakers (speaker rings courtesy of HookedonTronics - thank you sir).

So, what is shown here is really just the sub and amp stuff.

Purchased from Sonic Electronix:
Rockford Fosgate R600-5 (5-ch amp: 50x4 and 200x1 RMS)
Rockford Fosgate Prime R1S410 10" sub
NVX XKit42 - 4 ga amp kit (sep bought 2 extra signal cables and extra 25' of 16ga speaker wire)
Terminal Cup
Total was: $386.51

Purchased from Lowes:
(1) 4'x8' sheet of 3/4" MDF (which I had them cut 3x to (4) 2'x4' pieces)
5 lb. box 2" ext sheetrock screws
Titebond wood glue
(1) Tube of Silicone
Assorted Extras

Next Pics, I did the compass fix while I was at it.

 

The box I made over the course of a few days, couple hours here, couple hours there. I elected not to upholster, just some wood filler over all the outside joints, prime, and paint. My rear cab is crammed with tools day in and day out and if I ever have a passenger, it's just one. Definitely not a show truck.

I found that a piece of 12 gauge electrical wire helped a great deal to keep the door boots as open as possible when trying to fish the speaker wire through there (I guess a coat hanger would work too, which I had read someone used in another thread).

My head unit only had two sets of pre-outs: one for Front and one for Rear/Sub, so I used splitters on the rear/sub pre-outs to allow for all 3 sets of signal cables. Again, not a show truck, I just like a "full" listening experience, and the gear and setup works for me.

I guess what I'm saying is, it sounds good to me and this setup is not for competition. It is quite a stark contrast to just running the cab speakers off of the head unit though!

Last pic is rear view camera inside Pop-N-Lock tailgate handle. Did that a while back, just thought I'd post that too.

I'm extremely grateful to all of you TW members out there for posting up so much info on these trucks. It really took all the guess work out of doing this and my other projects.

I'm sure I would never have done half the stuff I've done to my truck if I had to take it to a shop for install. DIYer, what can I say.

Just a heads up!g Placing that amp under the seat is a harsh place to install. If it shorts out your on fire. There is not enough airflow to keep the Amp cooled. It should be off the floor. The floor gets hot. Props on the DIY..

I certainly follow your point. Space is at a premium in this thing. I need the rest of the rear cab room for my tools. Any suggestions?

 

Does you amp have a fan?

 

Excellent work, looks great. I have my amp under the seat as well, have had zero problems so far.

 

I'm sure it doesn't. I know that the amp needs air space, but it seems like it has a pretty good bit. The ass end of the seat upholstery hangs down in a way that makes it look like there isn't any, but I looked and it has at least a couple inches of clearance between the top and sides.

I think I feel myself starting to get paranoid.

my amp as been under my seat since 2006. never had a problem with it getting too hot

 

Just looked it up on crutchfields, not fan cooled. Mine is under the seat also but it is fan cooled. You probably dont have to worry about it unless its 100 degrees inside your truck and you are blasting music for hours. In the summer, here in Memphis, it does get XTRemely hot, so I'll keep that in mind. I do love to blast it, but after a few songs my age starts to show. Sometimes I feel like quite the puss turning it down, but what can I tell you?

I checked out your build, btw. Badass! My Dad worked at Langley for about 8 years in the 90s, so very familiar with Newport News, Williamsburg, Hampton, etc. Love being down there! (Most of it anyway )

 

Just space the amp with some 1/2 spacers to get it off the carpet and you'll be fine. I live in Az, ran amps under my seats for years in this heat, no problems.

Plus to help cool, run the AC to the floor if your worried.

My installer told me the same, so I chose this as a good spot.

 

I've ran amps under my seats since 2003 with no issues.
