it's this easy:

1) measure transmission output shaft angle (@ bearing cup, yoke ect.)
2) measure drive shaft angle near output shaft
3) subtract smaller # from greater #, this is your angle. 1 degree is optimal.

Do the same at the pinion (rear). easiest way to adjust this angle is using shims.

 

now measure your drive shaft angle like i said above ^^^

 

ok... I have the AAL with my Toytec Ultimate lift (2 years old) and thinking of putting a complete leaf pack in.... I sag just a tiny, tiny bit now, is it going to jack the rear up to much to where I like like I am starsky and hutch in a torino?

 

Lol, whats you hub to fender measurement now? Compare that measurement to the ones in OZ's dakar thread and there ya go. You can remove leafs from the dakars also if you don't want to much lift

How does that system insure the tranny output and pumpkin output are aligned ?

My measurments are lower than your with dakars with a leaf removed (third from top)

 

ok so if I went with the dakar's it would give me a significant rise over what I have?

 

Depends on what you consider significant really. Your at 24, 23 1/2 so lets say 23 3/4 average. So according to other averages you can expect 7/8" more lift give or take. If you want to see what it will look like find a spot on your frame to jack up one side of the rear end up a little

 

ok, I was thinking you would see a rise of 1.5 or so... 3/4 to 1 inch is fine... Thanks

For pinion angle, I have read in a number of different articles that there is no magic number. The best angle for your truck is found by matching the opposite angles. I.e. for a one-piece drive shaft the pinion angle should be the same as the output shaft angle, or match the angle at the carrier if you have a two piece.

Can anyone lend any credibility to this?

Alright here we go..
this was done in my driveway so it's on an slight angle. That doesn't make any difference since the procedure is just subtracting one angle from the other.

We'll start at the pointy end of the truck...
angle finder on the output flange of the transfer case like mya


angle is 2 degree's, record that #


now put the angle finder on the driveshaft, close to the output flange of the t-case


0 degree's record that # and/or do the math now. You want to subtract the smaller # from the larger # so that puts me @ 2 degree's. Optimal # here is 0 degree's (t-case flange to driveshaft)


now at the rear of the truck, angle finder goes on the pinion flange like mya


0 degree's, record that #


now put the angle finder on the driveshaft close to the pinion flange


4 degree's. Do the same as you did at the t-case, subtract the small # from the large # puts me @ 4 degree's.


Here's how this measurement differs from the t-case measurement. Since the pinion goes "positive" under acceleration (pinion flange points up) you want the pinion flange to point about 3-4 degrees "negative" (down). Under acceleration the pinion will move those 3-4 degree's, putting the rear drive line angle @ the optimal 0 degree's.

The u-joints live the happiest when the total drive line angle is 0 degree's. That is the difference between the t-case measurement & pinion measurement. My total drive line angle (t-case to pinion) is 2 degree's. Again, subtract the smaller # from the larger #.. 2 @ the t-case from the 4 @ the pinion put's my total drive line angle @ 2 degree's. If I installed the carrier bearing drop I could probably obtain the magic 0. At 2 degree's I have no vibrations at all so I'm fairly happy with it.

 

yeah and this got me thinking since I did not measure the rear either


23.5 on passenger side (front) 24+- a tad on the rear

24 on Drivers side (front) 24.5 +_ a tad on the rear

So I actually am/are level....
