And this is why I said something. Because people need to know that these will not bolt straight into a front diff that have 3.73 in it. I guess everyone needed a detailed description. Good job sir ;):D

Sorry to jack the thread but I'm confused as shit now.

The housing for the sport is 8.4" but the ring is 8" ? Or are you saying the housing is 8" as well?

I guess that's why you can't look on Yukon or Auburn's website and find R&P for an 8.4" rear diff.. :goingcrazy: Well it's never too late to learn I guess:eek:

    Bump

$800 is the high end rough estimate for total job. That includes $350 labor, $120 for these gears and then whatever fluid and taxes and miscellaneous parts I might need.

Theres a lot of technical posts in this thread about different gears and different trucks, but i take it nobody knows the answer to my question that i've been bumping:
THESE gears for MY truck, since I'M the one buying them :)

    OK, so you're a 2WD pre-runner, non-elocked right??

Then the rear gears specified by the OP should work for you.

The FRONT gears, as mentioned, originally came off a 1st gen, and will only work on a 1st gen 4x4. The OP mentions that 'achirdo' used them on his truck.

But achirdo is ALSO a 4x2 pre-runner, and therefore can't have installed the front gears either.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-builds/131366-achirdo-golden-truck-build.html

JAndrews is correct about the nominal diameter of the gears. However, the bolt pattern/fitment means that the gears for e-locker and non-e-locker rear diffs are NOT interchangeable with each other. That's why they're informally (and incorrectly) called 8" vs. 8.4" gears.

    Correct.

Also correct; the "8.4" nomenclature also seems to be a nod to the increased diff strength. Ironically, this has to do with everything in the assembly BUT the ring gear.

It's worth noting that in 2010 Toyota switched to an 8.2" ring gear on the FJ Cruiser in a "shadow response" to all the blown e-locker diffs out there. While it's better than the standard 8", it's still not what these trucks need, which is a bona fide 9" back end with modern heat treating and assembly methods.

So yes, there's a genuine OEM 8.2 (with or without e-locker) in the wild to confuse things even more.

Yea so I'm pretty safe with my 2wd, TRD Sport (no electronic diff locker option as with the TRD offroad package).

Bolt pattern on the ring gear started making me nervous :)
