manual hub conversion????

I'm trying to figure out if I can do this and what EXACTLY I'll need to pull off a donor truck to make it work. I'm getting conflicting information.

I have a 1999 Tacoma V6 4x4 with ADD hubs. I want to freewheel.

I've read on here that it's possible but couldn't find a write up. Just links to kits, or writeups that refer to specific prebuilt kits.

I stopped by an offroad shop today to inquire about them doing the work if I can find the hubs. They told me it wasn't possible and that none of the parts are interchangeable. I told him I've read different and he said, if the 'knuckles' are interchangeable then maybe.

Can it be done? How much of the axle do I need to take off a donor truck before the parts become interchangeable?

I did do a search and I found and read that thread before I posted mine.

Like I said in my post, all I could find were threads about pre-assembled kits.

That post is about a kit assembled by OFS. It does have a part list, but it is not detailed and does not say from where the parts are sourced. are they remanned? are they from a 2.4L, a 2.7L, or what?? are they fabricated?

i'm not looking for a kit. i'm trying to find the parts myself.

what I want to know is how much of an axle from a 4cyl donor vehicle do I need before it will attach to my v6 with ADD hubs?

I know I can't just swap the hubs, they are not interchangeable.

I've seen hubs for sale here, at other forums, on line, and might be able to find some at the local salvage yard.

But if I need more than the hubs, I'd need to know what else.

This is more what I'm looking for. But it's for doing the swap on a 4runner and not a Taco.

Does anyone know if they are set up the same?

 

4tunner is the same.. All my parts came from a 4 runner, to go from ADD to manual you'll need a different tube on the front diff, one that doesn't have an opening for the actuator... Then obviously cvs, and it'd be easier to just pull the spindles off with the manual hubs already in them and rebuild them before you install

 

I just finished my swap on Tuesday. No driveline vibration on the highway already made this swap worthwhile for me.

However, I just kept my ADD diff tube. The 27 spline inner CV's are the same for both manual and ADD CV's; it's the outers that are different. Only "problem" is you retain all of the vaccum BS, but I was already too far in the hole to worry about that.

It took my buddy and I the better part of a day to do the swap, but I also did new ball joints, tie rod ends and added a new-to-me coilover and uni-ball UCA. Easy swap when you've got all the parts.

Parts I used:
Manual hub spindle (complete from a 98 2.7L Tacoma). Found online $150.
Used Warn hub (woulda preferred AISIN). $100
Aftermarket manual hub CV. $150 at O'Reilly
I needed the two splined washers/spacers (90560-27005), 2 snap rings (90520-27023) that go on the CV and 2 gaskets for the hub to spindle interface (43422-60060). These were about $14 from my dealer.

I've got a list of the rest of the part numbers if you need them. PM me for details.

 

Everything from the oil seal (inner side) to the axle hub (outer side next to brake rotor) will be in one piece from a donor spindle. Note: this diagram shows an ADD axle hub which doesn't have the hub studs, cone washers, flat washers and nuts, but everything else is the same.

 

did you take the needed diff. tube off the 4runner as well?

 

did you mean this is from a MANAUL hub, not an ADD?

My apologies brother. A write up for a runner should be identical mechanically.

Sorry, the wording sucks, but the diagram is a little confusing too. It's cropped from the FSM. Let's see if I can clear it up without pointing and grunting in person.

In the diagram, there is a part to the left of the brake rotor labeled "axle hub". The "axle hub" pictured in this diagram is actually from an ADD spindle. If the "axle hub" were from a manual hub spindle, it would have the lug studs (as pictured) in addition to studs for the manual hub (AISIN or WARN) to bolt to.

If it's not clear, I'll see if I can find the pic in the FSM when I get home. The exploded view not pictured shows both "axle hubs", which is the only part (to the best of my knowledge) that make the spindle a manual hub spindle or an ADD spindle*

*There is some ABS/non-ABS junk, but I won't get into that right now.

 

ok, i see what you are saying. i was looking from the right to left and saw the 'free wheel hub' diagram and assumed the whole page was for manual hubs, and not just that part.
but i gotcha now. thanks.
