My dad was a Marine. When I mentioned going into the military, he said if I picked anything other than the Air Force, I was dumb! :)

I wanted to be a Marine since I was about 6 years old according to my mom. My dad was a USAF Captain (ret), my stepfather was an artilleryman in the army. My sister was married to Navy and later on Coast Guard. My brother was in the Army, and my son is in the Army National Guard.

I had to have my parents sign permission to sign my contract for the Marines, because I was still 17. Though I couldn't ship to basic until 18, they allowed you to sign your contract at 17 with parental signature approval. I loved every second of my 8 years I was in. I wouldn't change a thing. While I have complete and total respect for all of the branches, and their members, there is something about the Marines that just has always stood out. A few things that I thought interesting: When you get out of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Coast Guard, you are called Ex-"branch name". When you get out of the Marines, you are a "Former Marine" There is no such thing as an "Ex-Marine". When you leave the services, if you did not serve and retire, you are not authorized to wear any of your uniforms in the future. If you were in the Marines, you can wear your dress blues to any formal even you wish, even if you only served 4 years. With the exception of being out of service for an extended time period, if you were a former Marine and transferred to any of the other branches, your time in basic training is accepted, and you can go right in. If you are in any other service and transfer to the Marine Corps, you have to go to basic training. (This may have changed in recent years, but this was the rule when I was in between 1986 and 1994)

And the biggest thing I have noticed is that when in public if two former military or one former and one active member pass each other on the street, little if anything is said. You will not find a Marine passing another Marine on the street without hearing the oh-so-familiar "Semper Fi!" passing between the two.

I appreciate your service and hearing your experience :) I signed the dotted line when I was 17 as well!

Also, I have literally never, ever said "Semper Fi" or "oohrah" to another Marine haha :p
