one thing though if you want the offroad in the double cab you get stuck with the shortbox. i went with the doublecab longbox trd sport then am planning to add in the ARB rear locker. just something to consider if you are going to be using the box.

you make it sound bad ?

there is nothing wrong with brake modulated auto-lsd, it is superior
to a mechanical lsd clutch system in many ways. the end result is
the same, you aren't gonna have one tire spin and make ruts

standard lube and no clutches to deal with for starters. it works great

That's very compelling also - except that I don't do wrenches much anymore - LOL. But you are right, it makes sense. There is an I4 access cab 4WD at a dealer about 100 miles away in Kans, but with the SR5 it's $28K.

    Thanks for the input.

Is there something about the 2004 that disappeared on 2005 on up?

Right - but I don't haul much anymore, since my all horses died over 10 yrs ago. In fact that's why I like the DC over the access cab - smaller box, so good excuse not to haul stuff. :)

I don't think it's necessarily bad, but I don't think it's good either. Having brake-controlled limited slip on a vehicle that's open-open is fine for the base model 4wd but I'd take the older mechanical LSD over the brake induced version. I don't think the brake controlled limited slip setup works as well but you're right, there are pros and cons to each system.

28K? WAY Too Much. I bought my 13' V6 Access Manual TRD for 29,900. Figure 4-5k for the engine upgrade and $2,500 from SR5 to OR. They can do MUCH better than that.

Arm yourself with as much information as possible. I looked at yr old used ones and was going to pay nearly the same price as a new one.

    Check this out for starters.
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/238072-2013-pricing-what-did-you-pay.html

My dealer haggled with me for 2 wks til I used this and had my original price in 2hrs. http://www.fightingchance.com/ <-- like 40 bucks but worth it IMO

I was just messing with ya. I owned two second gens (05-13) and decided for my own taste that a first gen would be the better truck. I'm not a fan of all the new bells and whistles but I get that most people are.

I wish they made a workmans package with no carpet, no satellite radio, etc :D

Wouldn't you just sit there with ping-ponging rear spinning wheels - all the power going to one wheel and then the other?

I'm with you on that - I wish Toyo would make a work truck like Chevy with manual windows etc, to which you could add 4 x 4 and whatever other individual options you want, instead of pkgs that give you fog lights and cruise control in addition to the rear locker you need.

Does this approach work on an ordered truck or just inventory?

Mine was ordered (sorta). From what they say you cant order one per se. The dealer can see what is coming off the line with the package you want. Mine was half built and told em I would wait (they didn't like that). It was super white and I told em to change the color. Happened with no problem except they then tried to say it was "custom" and tried to add money BAHAHA. I told them to stop using that terminology or I would walk. I told em not to mention financing or I would walk. Told em I would stay for an hour each time I came also. I probably could have got a better price if it was in stock.

Know their tactics and don't give them the advantage. If that dealer doesn't want to work with you go to another. Get a quote on paper from each. Play them against each other. Don't be in a hurry to get it and be willing to drive (and walk out the door). Be armed with data and dont believe a word they say. You are not there to make friends :) . If the guy in city doesn't want to help you call the rural guy.

I have a 2011 Access Cab 2.7L 4x4 SR5. Absolutely love it. I tow a 17ft whaler easily (although not far). It has plenty of power, just step on the gas. You will see some higher RPM's when really trying to accelerate but the I-4 can handle it. Mine has 45,000 miles on it.

My $.02. We had a '97 2.7L 4-cyl and only got 16-17 mpg. Plus it was a snail getting up to freeway speed. We now have a '06 V6 TRD Sport and get 17-19 mpg, and 21 mpg on the highway. I think some of the performance issues and the poor mileage might be due to our elevation--4700 ft.

I consistently get 21+ mpg in my 2011 2.7L. That is with 70% city and 30% highway. I think you gas mileage difference has to do with comparing a '97 to an '06.

    I had a 2006 2wd with the 2.7L.

I thought I was going to save gas. My MPG was around 15-16.

Traded it in for a 2012 4x4 v6. My MPG is around 15-16.

So in the long run it is how you drive it.

I am a lead foot and like the get up and go.

If the 2.7 can do that, it will certainly do anything I need. I'm used to 25 mpg from the 2.4, and have to think the 2.7 with 5 speed would give better mileage than the 4.0 6 speed since I don't pull anything around and don't haul gravel. :)

By the way, I worked at the Naval Underwater Weapons Center in Newport, RI, back when the Tall Ships came to Narragansett Bay.
