Help! Did my 17x9 wheel decision come back to bite me?

I did a TON of research before getting my 17x9 moto metal 951B's (4.5" B.S.). I really wanted these, and from what I could tell, there were no really pros or cons to going with an 8" wide rim opposed to a 9" wide rim (and the 951s aren't available in 17x8). I come to find out that tire mounting choices are a bit limited in 265/70/17 on a 9" rim. OK, I'll live with that.

What issues did I create for myself if I decide to go with 285's in the future? Am I going to have more rubbing than I would have had with 17x8? Does a 17x8 rim make the side wall look better than a 17x9? It seems some have frame rubbing issues, etc.

Just curious on the input. Is this really a non-issue?

 

don't hold me accountable here but i have the moto metal 951b's and they are great. but i do think you will have more rubbing issues with a 9" wide wheel over an 8" wide wheel. most 285's have a maximum wheel width of 9" so if you want that "bubble look" you are going to have to look a little harder. if i had it to do over again, personally, i'd find an 8" wide wheel. but i'm perfectly content with the 951's, they are great looking wheels.

 

I bought mine 17x8 because I was told i would rub the UCAs with the 17x9 Wheel

 

Mine with 285/70/17's on MotoMetal 955's. Some trimming needed to be done. Mainly that knob that sticks down on the front side of the fender liner and about 1/2 inch of the fender flare on the lower front inside edge. Also neede to remove front mud flaps. I have no rubbing at all now. But I dont do any off roading wit it either.

 

I have 265/70/17 on 17x9 MotoMetal 957b and that is where mine rub also, but my rubbing is mostly when the suspension is being compressed like over bumps, driveway etc. I run Nitto Terra Grappler's which fit up to a 9" rim, they look normal to me. I don't know about the 285 issues though.

 

Now I remember why I got 17x9 wheels. There are no 17x8 wheels that I like... Everything is a compromise.

Can you post some pictures of your set up from a head on angle? And from the rear? I'm thinking about a 275 on 18x9 set up, hopping that going one size thinner will help keep the tires from sticking out too much. But I'm concerned about the width of the rim also... Why can't moto metal make 18x8's

 

I don't have the best pics of my set-up, but I'll give you what I have at the moment. Mine do stick out pretty far, maybe 2inches I'd guess.





Basically the 1st row of thread is how far it sticks out from the bottom edges of the fenders. I don't have mud flaps on and I don't have an issue with rocks chipping the paint behind the tires, I have more chips on my hood...if that is your concern. I love the way it looks with the wider stance.

I'm not sure that a thinner tire would keep it from sticking out, I think that is more about the offset of the rim and also the width of the rim...maybe someone else can clarify that??

275/65/18 are approved for the 9" rim but 275/70/18 are only approved for 8.5" with the Nitto TG.

 

In the Procomp 7089 17x9 -6offset 4.75bs, that's too much backspacing, that's why you had to go with the 17x8 0 offset 4.5bs.

I just had my new tires/wheels installed Wednesday and they are 17x9, 4.53bs -12offset xd revolvers. 4WP even trimmed it for me cutting off that little bump hanging from the fender and other minor wheel well covering. No rubbing at all with 285/70/17 when at full turn L or R. Haven't gone offroading yet, but the street stance is awesome. Pics coming this weekend.

 

Looking forward to pics, could you possibly take a pic of the area they trimmed. I have to do the same, cut off the bump, and I'd like to see how they did it.

 

So I got new shoes installed. I was at the local Firestone getting new tires on our Solara, and I got into a discussion about the Tacoma and about how I was going to go to NTB to get the Terra Grapplers installed. After a good bit of discussion (negotiation), they said they'd give me 4 Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos 265/70/17 installed with road hazard for the same price as NTB would give me for the Nitto's, $685. Thats OUT THE DOOR. This is LITERALLY a deal I couldn't pass, so I jumped on it.

Now, we've given this firestone about 100,000 miles worth of maintenance work on our Solara, and they've worked with us ever step of the way. Plain and simple, he said he wanted my business. Well, he got it!.

I'll post pics eventually. But my initial impression is that they are definitely aggessive looking (which was my concern based of pics I've seen of the tire).

As FoxySandChick along with someone else mentioned, I do get a small amount of rubbing on a nub on the front mud flaps when turning. It's not full lock, maybe half or so. I'm curious on what has been done to fix this besides removing the front mud flap. How much was ground down? Was it all mud flap material or also fender material? Its not really bothering me that much, it'll probably go away in a few thousand miles, but its still something I'd be interested in hearing.

Sorry, I didn't get a pic of what they trimmed, just what they look like now. You can go out and look at yours for comparison though.

 

I was under the impression that your mudflap was what was trimmed. Those pictures don't show your mud flap. Sorry, maybe I misunderstood.

 

I took off my front flaps and just left the rears as is. sorry for the confusion

In this thread, his 4th pic down, the part he has marked in the square...the outer corner of that knob is where mine rub on full turn. I'm just going to cut that entire piece off straight across. Then I will see if the tire is also hitting the inner corner of the fender flare and trim or file if needed, it doesn't look like I will have to though.
I took all my mud flaps off before I got these tires, I don't have any rubbing where the flaps were.

STLTaco09- Congrats on the deal, post some pics . My bf has duelers on his Z71, they seem to have held up well for him.

I did have some rubbing of the mud flaps. I didn't want to take them off though as to protect the paint on the doors a bit. I trimmed the fronts so they weren't so long, and I cut the nub off where it rubbed at about 1/2 lock (and only sometimes), noted by the number 1 in the picture. I also snipped a piece of the fender flare which was under the nub (1 in pic) on the modflap.
The number 2 in the picture is where it also sometimes rubs at full lock, but I felt that trimming this would significantly weaken the mud flap. I'll live with this rubbing as it is pretty minimal.

 

I went through your posts and see that you have the TSB springs but do you have the 5100's installed? If so, what setting? I just ordered the same setup over the weekend and probably wouldn't have if I had seen your latest pics. They look okay but it's pretty clear that a 9" rim should have a larger tire on it. Oh well! If there is a good side to this, at least the tread appears to be under the flares. Good luck with yours.

 

I dont have the 5100's installed, but yes, the TSB springs are on there. The tread is definitely under the flares too. It looks aggressive for sure, and I got a lot of compliments about it when I got the tires put on (3 people were in the Firestone parking lot standing around complimenting me on the truck).

It sucks about the pictures, they really don't do it justice. Like FoxySandChick mentioned, it looks fine. And to add to that, it looks a lot better in person, especially with the 265/70/17 opposed to the 265/65/17. The larger side wall helps. I dont think it looks bad at all. I was nervous about my 17x9 wheel purchase, but after looking around again, I can't find any 17x8 wheels that I like. So I'm definitely happy with this setup.
