Tube steps, toyota or aftermarket?

Hey guys-

Sold my jeep the taco replaced, so I got my mod money! Yay! Next up is tube steps. Looking at the brushed silver toyota ones, or considering aftermarket if they look better/are cheaper and no drill installs. Anyone got aftermarket tubes? Would be nice if I could get em in mag gray, but brushed silver will match my stock trd sport rims. Could go black too. Don't know much about the aftermarket steps, soo.....

I would get sliders over tub steps...They will save you over step when you go wheeling. I would hate for you to come across a rock like this and have your steps hit them.

Main reason is so my kids (4 and 7 yo) can get in the truck easier. No lifting going to be installed on this guy right now, stock wheels too. But, if I got the stock tube steps and I wanted to go wheeling, they would come off anyways.

Edit- just noticed your rims. Very nice. Need to find those in gray someday for mine...

 

I understand. Then go here...I think they are one of the cheapest. I have a railway ones on my Tundra. Easy to install. I would not buy from the dealer, as you can find the exact ones from this site.

My dealer told me she would cut me dealer cost on any accessories. But I need running boards for the wifies pilot too, so, I'm checkin dis out!

The railway ones on that site say theyre abs plastic - is that right? Waffling between that and some metal ones. Hrm...

 

At least you have something to compare with...dealers are willing to work for you more. I have also heard that when the Parts department sells you the stuff at retail they make a grip. They can easily sell to you at cost. There are many post on here that people get deals from the stealerships.

 

i saw a silver trd with silver toyo tubes and they were super clean. aftermarket doesnt compare to the OEM tubes imo.

Could you explain the difference? I tried googling it and can't find that one single explanation to satisfy my curiosity as I have been thinking about tubes but then hear "go with sliders".

 

Sliders help protect your body when you go off roading. The step bars are more for getting in your truck. Some also decrease your clearance. It all depends on what you do. Demello and All Pro are just some places that carry sliders.

I myself am torn between wanting to keep the existing steps I have because they're functional for me. I actually use them to help load the roof rack and I love the width. On the other hand, the black nFab look sharp and sleek on our trucks. Just not sure about having a pipe-style foot pad to load.
So this begs the question... what will you be doing more of? Loading or Off-roading?

 

Very true... and good questions. I love my step bars on the Tundra as they serve a purpose. But when I get a tacoma...the sliders will be one of my first mods. I have been with people who scrape theirs and it just gives you piece of mind knowing you have protection when wheeling.

 

How is it that tube steps don't provide the same protection?

Do sliders go across the whole underside? And are bolt-on ones available?

 

I don't think steps are strong enough and sometime give you a lower clearance. Sliders are made for your truck to slide off rocks if you get in that situation. Steps will also have bolts on the bottom which can get caught and not provide you with the sliding affect. Sliders are generally welded on but some do come bolt on. I am sure there are other on here that know more than I do. I am just going on my experience with sliders and tube steps.

The rocksliders are made of a thicker metal than regular tube steps. I am able to lift an entire side of my truck with a hi-lift jack just by lifting from the slider. Trying to do that with a regular tube step would probably cause a ton of damage to your step and truck. I have yet to find a bolt on slider for the Tacoma. Sorry for the bad pic but the sliders do cover most of the side of my truck between the wheels, give or take a few inches on either side. I also like the option of having rocksliders kick out away from the truck near the rear wheels. Hope this helps.
