    Hi,

I bought a brand new 2013 sport and have put about 4000 miles on her. I just moved out west from the east coast and want to start to get more into off roading and overlanding and begin to build the truck out for that. That being said I am a emergency medicine resident which means I study about medicine all the time and know LITTLE about trucks. The most honest advice I seem to have gotten so far is to be careful about what you do because a lot of people jack there trucks up, put big tires on them and then wonder why they drive like shit because they dont realize they need to now put bigger brakes, better drive train stuff etc.

So I want to build my truck the right way from the start. I have the $$$ to start doing some cool stuff, but want the community here to give me advice on where to start before I take the word of the local off road shops given that I probably am someone they could hustle because I am new to all this

    Thank you guys

    D

If you have the money and really want to do it right, go with a Icon or King setup. Start asking around in this thread for some ideas.

I would strongly suggest you research a whole lot before you buy anything big. I have made that mistake with some of my previous mods and regret my impulsive decisions.

    Hi,

One of the members advised me to post up on this thread. I have a new 2013 TRD sport and dont really know where to start with building it out.

    Any book I should get?

Just moved from Virginia to Arizona for a new job.

I plan to use it to do some offroading/camping but eventually will also be driving her around the US as I take positions at different hospitals. Once I finish ER residency I plan to be travelling to different hospitals regularly and working with EMS. So I want her to be a tough home away from home.

Plus this sounds like an awesome hobby to get into and I love the way these trucks look modified.

I currently have about 5,000 dollars to play with.

That's a good post.. honestly tho for what you plan to do mid travel may be too much. Yes its nice yes it rides amazing but do you need it probably not. OME with dakars will get you a 3 inch lift that can handle almost anything you will throw at it. At $1500 it leaves you with $3500 left over. Spend $2000 on rims and tires and you have $1500 to spend on armor.

Toytec ultimate lift, katzkin leather interior and trd headlock wheels with bfgoodrich all terrains. That's how I would do it oh and some better audio in the truck

    Thanks

And by going ahead and doing the OME with dakars now that is a good base to continue to mod the truck later as I learn more... as in I wouldnt outgrow that choice in a year after learning more?

In this price range which wheels, tires and armor would you recommend? There seem to be a lot of different places on the truck one can armor? Would you get the front bumper armor first?

    thanks

    Sliders first.

And you might outgrow OME when you learn about mid travel. But OME is a great overland suspension set up

Mid travel is only good if you live in the desert

Mid travel suspension is only good if you live in the desert since that is what it was designed for

Just because thats all you see, that doesnt mean thats what it is built for.

It's all about your valving and tuning. You can build mid travel just for the dunes sure, however it can also be tuned for crawling.

DO NOT go to Desert Rat! They will probably try to sell you some Fabtech or Revtek lift for your truck. I know some of the Tucson guys come up to the Phx area to buy parts/get parts installed on their trucks. Depending on the route you want to go and you say money is not an issue check out Sierra Expeditions and SDHQ. Both shops are pretty popular with the locals and both sell and install the products they sell. If you want to go the OME route check out Sierra, if you want a nice mid-travel set up check out SDHQ (I would go with Icon).

Also, post in the Az BS thread. You might be able to get other recommendations on local shops and I'm sure that some of the guys might even offer a ride in their truck if you want to get a feel for a suspension set up they might have.
