TRD Sport v.s TRD Off Road?

I used to be a proud owner of a 98 Tacoma. Traded that in on a F-150 in 2005. Now I'm going back to my roots, and about to purchase a new Tacoma. My question is, what's the difference between the TRD Sport, and the TRD Off Road package? Any input is appreciated, thanks

 

TRD Sport

-Sport Seats (very comfy)
-Limited Slip Rear Differantial
-Hood Scoop
-Street tires / 17" rims

TRD Off Road
-Locking Rear differantial
-Off road tires (I think 16" rims)


Anyway, I'm new to the Tacoma so I'm sure I missed a few things.

I realy dont plan on doing much off-roading, just an anual trip to WV for deer season....

 

My advice would be to drive both. I had my heart set on a sport but after driving it I didnt like the ride. Tried out the off-road and I was much happier.

I Love the LSD in the snow. It's a hell-of-a-lot better than having an open diff in the snow.

 

Just the ride. It was a lot softer/bouncy to me on the 8 mile test course the dealer had.

 

I got the TRD sport. I like the LSD, I like laying 2 tire marks when I take off. Looks much more symmetric. Very little wheel spin when taking off hard from a stop, just get up and go!

 

you got most stuff. i just wanted to clarify that the seats are the same for the sport and the off-road. all TRD versions have identical seats

 

I got the Off road and I really don't care for the locker. Unless you do some mods that probably void your warranty you can only lock it in when in 4lo. That, and the manual says keep it below 5mph when locked in. Personally, I really regret not reading the fine print and missing out on the LSD. I have been told that with the open diff you don't get the fishtailing you do with an LSD but my last truck had LSD and I didn't spin nearly as much as I do now. Part of it is tires but most of it is having only 1 damn tire turning.

 

one other differance, you can't ( or at least I could not find) a double cab/long bed in the off road version

Well i got the TRD offroad and love it but if i was to buy new and had the option i would probably go for the sport especially if you dont do much offroading. I like the scoop and the wheels more plus ive never had the LSD before but im sure it would make for safer winter driving.

 

You are right on target Flycather about the open diff and more wheel spin in slippery conditions. I have noticed it also. I also got the off-road with the locker but plan on doing the Locker anytime mod, check out http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/technical-chat/4838-cheap-free-mods.html Voided warrenty or not. I drive a lot of snow covered (sometimes deep snow) roads, so I want the ability to lockup the rear in 4HI. I would have rather had the LSD and I have had the LSD on several other trucks and have never had a problem with them in snow but it came down to looks. I'm in the minority but I don't like the hood scoop and I like the 16" rims better.

IMHO if you like the hood scope and the 17" rims and will not be doing any off-roading get the Sport. I have not compared the ride of both models so no comment there.

I agree... When I buying my TRD offroad, the sport felt soft and unresponsive while the offroad was firm and just felt more quality to me. One bitch I have is (I love the turning radious) I hate the pin-to-pin its like three full rotations maybe more even.
