    I've got a '99 Tacoma.
    Automatic transmission
    4x4
    Manual shifter for the 4x4
    ADD Hubs

I can shift into 4H and 4L no problem. But when I want to get out of 4L, my T-case grinds when I shift into 4H. The truck is in neutral when I do this. I put it in neutral, and then move the 4x4 shifter into neutral and all is fine. But I have to go through 4H before I can get to 2H and when I make that move, I hear/feel grinding. Shit is still moving in that T-case.

    Is that normal?
Do I need to wait longer for the gears to stop moving?
    Is my T-case jacked?
    Or my transmission?

Again, I am stopped, trans is in neutral, T-case is in neutral, but grinds when I move it into 4H from 4L. All other shifting is fine. Going back to 4L is fine and moving out to 2H is fine.

Gen 1 Humvees (Army, not civilian) did the same thing. They do not have "park" on the auto trans gear selector lever. You could pull on the transfer lever and feel the gears slowing downs and grinding until they locked back into 4H. My 95.5 taco was a manual, and I never had any issue like that. I wonder if your trans needs to be in park, and you are experiencing what I used to in the old Humvees.

What does the owners manual say?

Neutral or park, is my guess. But I don't own a 4x4 Toyota.

I am in neutral when it does this!

    I'll try it in park.

My '98 Chevy had a manual transfer case, I could shift on the fly into 4H but to get into 4L it had to be in neutral (trans) and the e-brake had to be set. Besides an 1985 Ford Bronco (my first love) that's my only experience with manual t-cases.

I'm sure you'll get it worked out, though.

I shift my 2000 Tacoma the same way you explained you are shifting yours. My T-case does not grind at all. I would definitely say its not normal.

EDIT: I just saw u have a auto tranny. Mine is manual but I am pretty sure there should be no grinding period.

yeah, and just to be clear, there is no grinding at all when shifting INTO 4L. It's only when coming back out and moving the T-case from NEUTRAL to 4H that it grinds.

You have to pass through neutral to get from 4L to 4H and on to 2H.

Is it not letting you go from "N" to 4H or is it a quick little grinding noise then it pops over into 4H?

Not normal. I have 4x4, automatic, manual 4x4 shifter, no grinding when shifting. Have to be in neutral to make the 4Lo to 4Hi swift.

    Mine does the same thing:
If I am completely stopped, lots of grinding.
I asked my wheeling buddy about it as he has an 04 DCSB Taco Auto:
Shift while you are moving or stop completely, turn off truck, shift, start back up. I will stick with shifting while in N...

So, what assembly/gears in the transfer case are still in motion while the vehicle is stopped with the tranny in neutral? :notsure:

Yeah, I end up just cutting off my truck to shift back out of 4LO.

I really have no fucking clue what is still spinning even when I'm in neutral or park...

So, some of us have the problem and some don't?? It is really strange. i don't know what could still be moving with both the trans and the t-case in neutral, but something is. And I know the T-case is truly in neutral, cause if I leave it where it's at and put the transmission in drive, there's no movement. I know my transmission is truly in neutral, cause if i put the t-case back into 4L and hit the gas, there is no movement. And yet with both things in neutral, the T-case has spinning parts still???

It let's me make the shift, it just grinds like when you shift a manual transmission and don't have the clutch all the way in. The kind of thing that your wife does that drives you nuts. Once it's in, it's fine.

If the transmission is in neutral with the engine running , there is enough drag on the forward clutch inside the transmission to cause the output shaft of the transmission to continue turning .Even though the transmission is in neutral and forward is not applied , there is enough momentum to keep shafts turning . Its the drag thats causing the transfer case input shaft to turn .This is common .
Selecting " PARK " or turning off the truck would eliminate the revolving parts

If you ever owned an older dodge truck from the 70,s .......you could rev the engine in neutral and the truck would actually move forward . They were kinda scary letting them down off the hoist in neutral . As soon as the tires hit the ground , they would drive ahead . What a drag huh ?
