i thought the entire reason you bought the junk yard motor was so that you could drop it in and have your dd back up quick and then take your time to build the blown motor right and stout, while the junkyard motor put-putted along???? did i misunderstand?

That is the plan. Doing exhaust manifold / intake manifold / valve cover gaskets / new t-stat and t-stat gasket / plugs tonight hopefully, and in she goes.

may want to pull the drain pan and check the oil pump and pickup??? I know when i started adding that step in to my routine it sure seemed like race engines lasted longer.

Well... that is not a bad idea, I was going to drain it on the stand anyway so I could flip it over, I'm 2 shakes from removing it... Damnit! "While I'm there" jobs tend to stack up, don't they? (I already decided to resurface the flywheel and put in a fresh clutch while the trans is out.)

I like this direction. Get to the point that "well, while it's out, I'll drop an LS1 in it."

    Now we're talkin'. :D

Haha, yeah... To be honest, I need to tighten the nut behind the wheel with some more track days before I need more power. I like that it's got a pretty anemic engine as a beginner on the track, it keeps me out of trouble.

... That being said, after a season or two, some kind of power upgrade (or a different car) is probably in my future. There's a $5k bolt-on complete turbo kit that does 265whp... :spy:

Yeah, man, and the Miata is the thing to do it in. The vehicle dynamics are really close to driving other RWD cars when you're at the limit with a built Miata on race rubber. It just all happens more slowly and at lower speeds. Great way to learn.

Buddy of mine has an LS1 swap in a 240sx. It's retarded fast on the straights, but he hurts in the corners. It's a handful to say the least. To be honest, I can't imagine a lighter car with a shorter wheelbase. That'd be a bit much. I've also driven and ridden in a CRX pushing 275hp at the wheels. That thing was terrifying. Throttle lift snap oversteer on the track was intense. As soon as the weight transferred to the front in a corner, the back slid out huge. Friend of mine looped it at Barber several times.

Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on that one, it looks really promising. I'd have to do something about the carb, mainly, but otherwise it's good to go.

I'm just not quiiiite ready. I've got my trailer, and my house, just gotta recover after all the expenditures, almost there.

Hey bill, got a question for you.

A co-worker of mine just bought a used 98 wrangler, cleanest one i've ever seen used. Anyways, i'm the office jeep and work on cars guy so he came to me about how the oil pressure gauge will shoot down to almost zero and hop all around at idle and then go back to normal under acceleration. I told him it wasn't a huge deal as the 4.0's have finicky oil pressure sending units (almost everyone I know has had this happen and it comes and goes). Well, a day later he comes in and says "you were right, it quit doing that". Well today he just came in saying he's afraid he blew the motor. He said the oil pressure gauge started doing that, he had to pull over cause it was losing power and it started smoking. I didn't have time to ask him the usual questions about smoke color and where it came from but he did say it looked like there was water on the ground.

To me that sounds a little more like a coolant and overheating issue. Maybe his water pump went bad? Cracked/Leaking head? what do you think?
