Looking to upgrade trucks, thought I had it all figured out.

I've had my 2002 Tacoma PreRunner for a while now and it's been an amazing truck 99 times out of 100 it does everything I need it to do. I'm not into off roading (yet) but my hobbies do take me off pavement pretty frequently. I like to camp, backpack, rock climb, dirt bike, etc.








There have been a few times where the 2 wheel drive even with the locker has left me wanting. Ice for sure isn't fun. My last backpacking trip we had to change plans because I was scared to take my truck through some of the river crossings my dads' FJ made it through with ease.



I decided it was finally time to get rid of my MR2 turbo that I never drive anymore and upgrade my daily driver.





Someone wired my half the money and is flying in tomorrow to drive off with it. I knew that would be much harder to sell than my Tacoma but in the meantime I have been picking out my future truck.

The Sport vs Off Road package made that very tough. I like the look of the Sport but want the off road goodies just in case. I finally decided to go with the Off Road package in Magnetic Grey. And now that it's coming time to buy I'm having some difficulty. I have never purchased a new vehicle and am a terrible negotiator, but I still want to get the best price I can. They dealership I went to this morning sold both trucks that fit my criteria within 15 minutes of each other. My OTD price would have been $34,500 and I was going to walk away even if they had another one. But after another dealership sent me their factory invoice upon my request I'm starting to wonder if the deal I am looking for is even possible.




I realize that is for a Sport but they didn't have any Off Roads and the dealerships are telling me they are drying up fast. Are these dealerships really paying $32k for these trucks? I thought I was willing to pay dealer invoice right now but I also assumed that it would be more in the $30k range plus TTL.

Which brings me to my new dilemma. If I can't get a really good deal on the truck I want now, am I better off waiting to see what the 2014's offer? I saw a few threads on here but nothing that has been updated since around April, so I don't even know what will be different. If the 2013's really are drying up and selling for close to MSRP I will just save some more and try again in a few months.

Sorry for such a scatterbrained first post, but sometimes it helps me to put it into words and clear my head a bit. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.

buy it .. and at that price.. cant beat it.. where you get that price sheet?.. that paper which buyer dont see. but dealer do see it. I am planing to upgrade to a DC soon, would to grab that kind of paper where I got leveage with dealer.

 

Pick out the options you want and the exact body style and go to Consumer Reports and pay a small fee or look on some of the other auto sites to determine the actual cost that the dealer most likely paid minus holdback. Start getting email quotes for the truck that you want from dealers in your area. Also, try to find a truck that has been in the dealer's inventory for awhile that meets your criteria. The longer the dealer has been paying for it the more they will be willing to deal. Last but not least no matter what the salesperson tells you get the exact truck that you want.

 

Thanks it's been a lot of fun but once I moved out and my parents couldn't tell me I can't own a motorcycle I haven't looked back. I literally drove it once in a year even though it runs and drives great.

I emailed a bunc of local dealers and said I was willing to pay invoice if they would send me a copy of the invoice.

I have my exact truck picked out and went to look at it yesterday. The dealership had two and sold them both that morning. I guess the 2013's are going fast and they don't need to wheel and deal too much to get them out the door.

I bought a 2013 double cab sport out the door tax tag and title for just over 28k. Mine is 2 wheel drive though but add 1000 bucks or whatever that option is to it and you should be close. Just buy the bare bones base model 4x4 and mod it!

Sticker price on mine was almost 29k not sure what invoice was.

 

Thanks for the link. I won't pay more than 32 out the door right now. Not sure if that's realistic or not but that's what I'm willing to spend. Otherwise I will hold on to my truck a while longer

 

I pretty much had my price nailed down before I ever walked in the door by mostly email negotiation.

 

Yes, either TRD pkg, DCSB, auto, 4x4 will invoice right around $31K. I dont remember the exact price, but I paid invoice for mine and it was $31,XXX. 2013 4x4 dcsb Sport auto.

 

$500 over invoice is a fair deal. I would never pay more than that, but I have paid quite a bit less than invoice. Whether or not they will deal depends on multiple factors, but you can try a different dealership.

They have always shown me the invoice. And no, the invoice is not what they end up paying.

So 33K would be a decent deal.

 

Are you or your parents members of Costco? They have a price list that is at least a couple grand below sticker, probably under dealer cost. After I bought mine, (2013 tx dcsb 4x4 $34,000), a friend bought nearly identical truck with (2013 Tx dcsb 4x4) Costco pricing for $32,000. I am a member of Costco, and I didn't know they had a deal worked out with Toyota.

I haven't read the entire thread, just your first post... But Entune, that's your problem. I believe I paid invoice for all you have there except Entune, and it was lower for that reason. Entune is freaking expensive.

 

+1 on the guy that said Consumer Reports. Makes it super easy. The $20 or whatever fee for the online membership will save you a lot of money.

 

The car industry is a scam...i wouldnt rely on that invoice at all. The margins for new cars are much smaller than used but but they still look to get 2k at least from a new car. Idk what it will cost but start low and if your financing then you get to make 2 deals and the interest, down, duration will all make a huge difference in your total cost. You can negotiate the car price really well and fail the finance portion and end up paying 38 or 40 all said and done on a 30k truck.

Thanks guys. He's my little buddy. He was a stray in Yuma that was set to be euthanized. They told me he's a Wheaten Terrier. He's about 40 lbs and the most laid back dog ever. Doesn't bark and stays right by my side. Longest hike I've taken him on so far was 11 miles but that had some serious elevation change. Felt to me like 5 miles straight up and then 5 miles straight down be he did just fine. Carries his own pack backpacking too.

Also I told the dealership that 32 is my limit and otherwise I will wait for 2014's. The price now dropped to $30,318. Plus TTL though

 

It was posed a while back, for sure that the the 2014 Tacomas are not any different than the 2013 Tacomas, other than the model year, so your not going to get anything different other than a price tag. and, im pretty sure if you really wanted you could trade someone for a skewped hood and then repaint it to match your truck.
