The bajarack looks pretty good, reasonably priced, but 200 lbs max? With most RTTs being ~100 lbs, I don't think it can support me and my wife inside.

most production racks have much lower ratings than what they can actually hold. this is 100% due to lawyers. about 5 years ago, thule had to cut their load rating in half, down to 150lbs i believe. there were lawsuits from people who had loaded their racks to the limit and flip vehicles from taking corners like they were driving a sports car.

in all reality, with the construction of the yakima, thule, and baja racks, if you have evenly distributed loads, or are point loading it by the sopports that attach it to your roof, you will likely damage your roof before the rack is compromised.

OP, your least expensive option will be a yakima or thule. they are both fantastic racks. I prefer thule for a couple of minor reasons, but they are both of equal quality.

spend a little more, and you can have a baja rack, or spend even more than that, and you hcan have a fully custom rack that looks and functions exactly the way you want.

there isn't a bad option in the lot.

Good to know Colin. Last thing I wanted was my wife and I to fall from the roof rack collapsing and she gives me that, "That mod didn't work" look. I might look into Yakima/Thule thanks!

From experience I can tell you that the Yakima rack system will dent your roof arches just above the doors if you load it up (+100 lbs) and drive on bumpy roads or trails. The rack holds up fine, it the sheet metal they rest on that suffers. For an RTT, the Baja rack looks to be much better. Ever consider bed racks like the Thule X-Sport or even a Trac-Rac? Those will hold way more than a roof rack.

Look at the Front Runner roof rack. Expensive but they will hold the weight you are looking for.

    "FAQ

How much weight can my roof rack hold?

Generally 100-200 lbs. By law you are allowed 165 lbs going down the highway. When you are parked (static weight) it is a different story. Read your owners manual to get exact weight limit. If you need a rack system or more capacity any local Thule, Yakima dealer can provide a solution.

Is my roof strong enough to handle the weight of the tent and occupants?

Cascadia Vehicle Tents are designed to mount simply on your stock rack system or on a couple of Thule, Yakima and other aftermarket crossbars, the same as you would use to carry your bicycles, canoe or kayak.
The rack system transfers the weight to the structural parts of your car's roof. All roof racks carry a dynamic weight rating, to provide guidance on the tested limitations of the rack system when the vehicle is in motion. Most racks carry a maximum 165 pound dynamic rating, which means the rack can support 165 pounds of weight while driving down the road. Cascadia Vehicle Tents weigh only 108 pounds, so the rack system can easily handle the weight on most vehicles. When you are occupying to tent, this is a "static load", much more gentle and the racks can easily handle this weight. Always check with the manufacturer of your car and of your roof rack to determine the applicable weight limitations as they vary from vehicle to vehicle."

So my understanding is that when parked you can have more weight up top, but when moving you are limited. I am planning on putting a RTT on my ARE CX topper that is reinforced to handle 250lbs dynamic up top. I will be using Yakima crossbars as those are the ones that ARE recommends to use with their tracks.

There is a gent who just posted a thread about his trip to Baja Mexico and he has a Tepui tent mounted to a Baja Rack over his cab. Looks like it worked fine and he had a blast.
