If you go splashing through water/mud, you run the risk of splashing water/mud up there. You want the breather in a place where it's not gonna get wet/muddy

Yeah, I would just rather not have it poking into my gas compartment where I can see it and it may get in the way of the pump every time I get gas. Also it's just that you don't want it to be totally submerged - a little wet and muddy won't bother the spring loaded one-way cap on the valve.

I would say that using a two way valve - or just an open ended hose maybe with a filter (i've seen a fuel filter used) on it would equalize the pressure at all times, regardless of the temperature and keep water from being sucked in from other parts of the axle.

Anyone have an exploded view of the rear assembly?

Tell me how this is anywhere near being in the way of filling up.....

You can't because it isn't anywhere near being in the way. Choose any of the many places people have in the thread and just do it. No need for overanalyzation on this simple mod.

I didn't suggest any place in particular, I suggested just picking one. That's what "Choose any of the many places people have in the thread and just do it" meant in my post and in your quote of my post. The point about the gas filler is that you'd have to try pretty hard to fuck it up and it be in the way of filling up the truck putting it there.

Yeah that looks good. I saw one where it came up from the bottom right at an angle - and I was not a fan.

Just did this today using the stock breather at the gas fill port, but painted it black. Thanks for posting this mod.

I looked online and found a place charging about $5 per part plus $12!!! shipping. Autozone had nothing, and dealer special orders for $8 each. My dealer had the new part for the diff sitting in his cash register waiting to be installed in his own truck, which he sold, so he gave it to me for $0. Shhweet!

Good luck. Use the part numbers in the first post of this thread for your search. I just got the camary union and relocated the original breather. The breather was just big enough to clamp in the hose plus it's threaded so will have more grip than smooth. Haven't seen the specified part for comparison.

The point of the other breather instead of the original one is so it can breath in and out freely as temps rise and lower inside the housing. The original one doesn't do that.

Isn't half the reason for doing this to add a 2-way breather? You only eliminated half the problem if you used the stock breather. You still run the risk of sucking in water without a 2-way breather.

Never heard there was a change from one-way to two-way in this mod, however, if it's a one way valve, then how can it suck water, and what would be the need for the mod in the first place?

    Thanks.

How does breathing in help the diff as it cools? Doesn't the breather just allow for overfilling and keep you from blowing the seal? As a layman I'd expect the minimal vacuum after sealing to keep the valve closed and help seal the cover.

    All input is appreciated.

The 2 way breather does both - Helps keep pressure down on the axle seals as stuff heats up & helps keep the hot axle from sucking water in at the axle seals if submerging during any water crossing from the sudden cooling. Oil running out the fill hole on the backside of the housing keeps you from overfilling, not the breather.
