2013 Fog Light Anytime Mod

Love this Mod!!! Having the ability to turn my fog lights on anytime is very cool.
Such an easy and inexpencive mod. Sometimes you ask, "why doesn't Toyota just make this standard?" Well I guess its because We Tacoma owners love to work on our trucks!!

It was easy! Having the two rigs at once made the second one FAST!!!!!

 

Its because it is illegal in many (most?) places.

Any idea how the law works with lightbars - do they need to only function with low beams like fogs or can they be on/off anytime (generally speaking)?

 

The law is usually written to only allow 4 forward facing lights on at any time. When you have the high beams on, both the high beams and low beams are burning at the same time, so the fog lights must be deactivated when the high beams are switched on. Technically speaking all of the light bars, spot lights, etc must be covered for on highway use.

Generally it's not enforced unless you are caught driving on the highway with more than 4 burning at the same time. I'm not trying to scare anyone, just saying that's why Toyota (and other manufacturer's) don't set the fog lights up to where they can be on "any time".

Another option in my sig if you want them to come on w/the lights and not turn off with the brights. It's an easier mod IMO and I didn't have the desire to have them on w/o the headlights.

And if you wire them so they can be left on when the truck is shut down, remember, the switch has no indicator.
It's not a matter of "if", but "when" you come out to find a dead battery.

 

I just did this a few hours ago, easiest way I saw was put a wire directly onto the Positive battery terminal and wire it to the fog light relay by bending the pin out.

Don't see many people doing this, maybe because you can kill your battery if you accidently forget to turn them off since they can technically be on at ANY time.

Even if you have a lighted fog light switch like the FJ, you WILL leave it on sooner or later.

 

I like my fog lights on and my high beams on when I am in the back country of Montana and such!!

Well, not Montana (yet) but Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska & such.

 

Ya, fogs are a nice "near field" and "ditch light" fill to go with the high beams.

 

Seems like those antelope and deer jump up out of the ditches when my speed is a bit more then it should be...

 

Has anyone attempted to run a wire to the switch itself and using an inline crimp that wont cut the wire. Take the power feed from anything that comes on when the headlght switch is turned on to parking lights (i.e. dash lights). I have a leased truck and I am not gonna cut wires and bend relays if I dont have to. I was going to figure out a way to run a jumper wire from the fog light switch to a 12v power feed that is active when the parking lights come on.

I too have Leased my Tacoma. I did bend the jumper and have had no problems. Relays are cheap and easy to replace. Having it all contained in the one fuse box is much better than trying to run wires all over the engine compartment. I ordered an extra relay in the event I need to replace it for any reason. The whole mod can be removed in less than 2 minutes so don't be worried. As you can see from my picture it looks very clean and undetectable unless someone is looking for it. If you were to tap into another line you would have to run a wire out of the relay box and it would be seen anytime you had service done.
With that said after I'm done with everything I want to do I'm most likely going to have to buy this beautiful truck anyway. Hahaha......

 

Think you may want to have a look at your lights again lows go off on high beam.
