Clock spring / spiral cable replacement - symptoms, part number, & guide

Hi All,

I recently replaced my clock spring / spiral cable (Toyota uses the term "spiral cable"). I did a lot of research before replacing the part and found that most of the info I needed was scattered over multiple threads. So I wanted to create a consolidated info thread to help future TacomaWorld searchers

Vehicle information:
2005 Tacoma SR5
4.0 V6
4x4
~53,800 miles on odometer
NO steering wheel audio controls

My symptoms:
- Horn stopped working
- Cruise Control stopped working
- Airbag light on

I ordered my new clock spring / spiral cable from https://www.discounttoyotaparts.net/ (I priced every OEM supplier site I could find, and they had the lowest price including shipping).

I navigated to the following part of their website to find the correct clock spring:
- Click on "OEM Toyota Parts" link at the top of the page
- <enter year, make, model>, click search
- Click on the link for your Tacoma's Trim (e.g., mine was "Tacoma V6 1GRFE - 4.0 Liter)
- Electrical
- Restraint systems
- Air bag Components
- Clockspring
- Select either the one "w /o steering switch" if you DO NOT have steering wheel audio controls, or "w/ steering switch" if you DO have steering wheel audio controls. You'll notice a $20 difference between the two parts.


Since I DO NOT have the steering wheel audio controls, I ordered the following:

There are two versions of this clock spring / spiral cable. If you DO NOT have steering wheel audio controls, order the one I listed above. The official part number is: 84306‑04080 (which for some reason they don't list next to the part itself, however when the package arrived, the OEM toyota box it was shipped in had a sticker with the part number above printed on it).

If you DO have the steering wheel audio controls, the official part number is: 84306‑0E010.

The only part of the guide that I did not need to follow was the part dealing with the steering wheel puller. My steering wheel slid off nice and easy. Apart from that, everything else was the same.

Overall, this was a very easy DIY project. On a scale of 1 - 10, 10 being the most difficult, I would rate this as a 2. This took about 30 minutes, start to finish. By doing it yourself can save you around $200, compared to having the dealership do it for you.

Also, www.discounttoyotaparts.net was a pleasure to do business with. I ordered the part on a Sunday evening and they had it shipped out Monday afternoon. I received the part 2 days later (on a Wednesday) in a very well packaged box. I wouldn't hesitate to do business with them again!

DETROIT — Toyota Motor Corp said on Wednesday it is recalling more than 681,000 cars and trucks in the U.S. market to address potential problems.
The Japanese automaker said it will recall about 495,000 Tacoma pickup trucks from model years 2005 to 2009 to replace a part in the steering wheel. It is also recalling about 70,500 Camry mid-sized cars and 116,000 Venza crossover vehicles from model years 2009 to 2011 to replace a stop lamp switch.
Toyota said it is not aware of any accidents or injuries in either case.
For the Tacoma, Toyota will replace the steering wheel spiral cable assembly because friction may occur over time involving that part, which may result in the driver's side airbag being deactivated and not deploying in an accident.
For the Camry and Venza, silicon grease during assembly may lead to increased electrical resistance that can cause the vehicle not to start or the shift lever not to move from the "park" position, Toyota said.
Both fixes will take about 30 minutes, the company said. Owners of the affected Tacomas will be notified in early April, while the others will be alerted as soon as Toyota has the necessary replacement parts.

 

I went to the site to order the part and it lists the clock spring as N/A with no button to add it to my cart....any idea why it's no longer available?

 

Have you tried to have the dealer do it for free? It's a recall and your dealer should cover it.

x2... good thread but this shouldn't cost you a penny. This is a safety recall, Toyota is obligated to make the repair for free.

 

Yes. I have a 2005 and it has the steering wheel controls; Toyota told me it is not covered/included in the recall. I don't have the air bag light on, just the cruise control isn't working. So frustrating!

 

Same here. My cruise control stopped working, but no airbag light. I am also not apart of the recall.

I'd be awful leary of that working....if you give it go though, let us know how it turns out.

 

I had replaced this on my last truck, then 2 months later got a recall letter. So I brought it in, Toyota changed it again, and I mailed Toyota corporate a letter and my receipt from buying the part previously. They sent me a check about a month later.

 

I bought 2 of them. Just received them 2 days ago. I have audio controls, cruise and of course the airbag and horn not working. I noticed that even though it says it is for a vehicle with audio controls, there are 2 connectors, with 4 wires. So in short, I am not sure if everything will work. I am at least hoping for the horn and airbag.

 

Not the same part number. Won't work.

 

Any luck with that part?

 

Have not tried installing yet. Probably by the weekend. I might have two for sale! HAHAHA

 

Any luck? I think I ran into the same problem.

 

I did end up buying two of them. The 1st one I installed, the horn honked as soon as I hooked it up. Would not stop honking. The second one, has been working flawlessly. So I did have success with that part number. The worst part was the connections. I had to kinda bend the "male" pins to make the connections work on both of them. Took a long time! It's hard to line up like ten or twelve little pins when you can't see what's going on!

I spoke with two dealers in Denver and both said it was covered under the 3/36 warranty, so I'm out of luck. The part was about $345, and labor about $115. So I won't be doing that. Seeing as Toyota already had a recall on the same part on the '05-'09's, I think they will eventually extend the recall.

Any luck with the ebay/Chinese ones? I'm thinking of unloading my Tacoma for a 3/4 ton and I hate to buy a Toyota one, if the Chinese ones will at least remove clear the code?

I called Toyota this morning and my truck isn't covered under the recall (16 pin vs 7 pin). I have the wheel controls...the cheapest I've found a factory replacement is $226.00, ebay $49.99.

EDIT: I went ahead and ordered the ebay/Chinese clock (spiral) spring. I read quite a few of feedback comments posted and all (but one with a Prius) had positive comments about the clock spring they received! Granted most were impressed with the expedited shipping, but none-the-less, no real complaints about the part itself? I'll update once I get the part? $51.99 shipped from San Francisco (I'm sure off a long boat ride from China).
