X2... drain oil, replace filter, fill oil.

 

Drain, install new oem filter, replace drain plug washer and refill with your brand of syn. oil, I used Mobil1.

 

I've read on bobistheoilguy.com that if your car has high mileage, 75K and over it would be a bad idea to change over to a synthetic. The reason being is that synthetics contain a larger amount of detergents. These detergents would eat away deposits causing your rings and seals to become loose that had settled over time; therefore causing your car to burn/use more oil than normal. Early on in an engine's life there should be no problem.

 

No special way just replace as you would your dino.

That might be somewhat true but not to that extreme as you make it sound.

The amount of buildup in an engine that old - would not be cleared/cleaned away that quickly. Synthetics DO CLEANSE but not fast enough to remove 75k miles (years & years) of buildup.

I started using synthetics in my 96 tacoma @ 60K miles and ran it until I sold it at 110k miles. Surely, it burned 1/2 quart in 4,000 miles - but guess what? I sold that truck 5 years ago with 110k miles. It's still running around town, so obviously....after 13 years.... the synthetic surely didn't hurt anything.

 

I don't think from what I read over at BOIG claims that synth damages seals, it's more so that the synth oil removes carbon deposits and sludge out of an older engine; therefore breaking the artificial seal these deposits provided. Because of this, the engine consumes more oil. It's similiar to the claims of using high mileage oils with sealants for your engine's rings and seals and going back to regular oil. The seals will begin to break down? There was a lot of debate of this over on BOIG. If your well on your way to 100K i don't see at that point to switch over to synth...stick with the dino.

If you read over the link I attached...I think the consensus is that Synthetic itself won't ruin an engine, but instead show the flaws of your ill maintained engine. Again I'm not debating for or against the use of synthetic oil. Some people benefit from synthetic oil, some will never utilize the full potential of a synthetic oil. I think with Toyota's 5K change interval, most users don't need synthetic unless you tow or off-road, or live somewhere where the weather is extreme. I will have to disagree with you on how quickly a synthetic removes sludges and carbon buildup. If you believe the synthetic oil claims, most remove carbon and sludge within 1 oil change.....that's pretty quick.

 

Just recently came across this. I had a truck with 130k on it that was not maintained well (owner before me). It was running standard oil and had very little oil leaks. Once I switched to sythentic, about 2000 miles in I started noticing more and more leaks.

Further investigation, it seemed the sythentic loosened up all the "self-healing artificial" seals the engine had build up over the years. So to the point of the previous post, it didnt hurt the engine, but exploited all the real problems with it.

Don't think synthetic will hurt at all, infact most likely help your engine... but its possible some forgotten issues or self-healed cracks you were unaware of may surface.

Could be a blessing in disguise to get things fixed before its too late!

 

Just took a look over at Valvoline's and Mobil 1's website, and they verify that an existing oil leak, will become worse with the use of their synthetic product. Therefore an existing condition hidden by desposits/sludge/build-up in you engine will be exposed by a change over to synthetic.

So thats why I had oil stains all over the road!! I guess the moral to the story is if you have an older truck thats not worth fixing, keep using the regular oil so you don't rip off the sludge scabs....

 

Ummm....the only ill maintained part about it, is someone using regular oil since the vehicle was new and allowing the sludge to buildup over time. That's the problem..... and that wasn't meant as a stab to anyone.

If anything, regardless of what oil you use.....more often than not, your vehicle frame/body are gonna rot out long before engines fail (with regular maintenance).
