I'm looking to add an AFE cold air intake to my 2013 Tacoma but I haven't been able to find a clear answer as to wether or not it will pass California's emissions test. The rep at 4wheel parts said to keep my stock system just in case. Not sure I want to be swapping it out every other year.

Fwiw I just swapped out my TRD cai on my '07 with a stock one I got from a friend to pass smog tomorrow (also live in ca- stupid CARB laws). It only took 30 minutes. Pretty simple swap.

So I'll keep my stock intake and just swap it out at smog time. Stupid California!! I'm hoping the $400 investment is worth it. My brother (faryota) has the AFE CAI on his 2013 and he swears by it, as far as MPG, HP and torque increase are concerned. I've read several posts that say otherwise. Then again I read several that said I couldn't get 285s without major cutting and that was wrong.
Well I'll add it to my list of mods and just enjoy getting under the hood.

    Thank you for your input!!

If I were you I would just keep it stock since the stock airbox is a cold air intake

There's always a lot of bad information here when it comes to performance.... Too many people have the "its a truck" or "Toyota engineers squeezed every ounce of HP/mpg out of these trucks and there's nothing to gain but noise" mentality.

Its ur truck, enjoy it how you want!

At least ur not asking for a k&n hot air intake.... Gadget at urd dynoed one and LOST HP ;)

Been running the afe stage 2 si off and on for a few yrs now while n/a and force fed.... It never caused any mechanical problems. I thought it was a bit loud before, but now all I hear is whine.

AFAIK, the K&N unit is the only one with a CARB EO number.

What about the new pos TRD version made by K&N?
Never looked at one to see if it was carb legal.

I'd hope it was since that's the whole reason Toyota took the older and proven model made by afe off the market.

I'm in no way suggesting the op buy 1, at least not until Toyota holds k&n responsible and fixed the thing, or awards the contract to afe if they can build it right.

If it's a K&N unit, then it is likely exempted, but I'd check before plonking down $200+

Between their piss poor filtering, proven HP loss, oiled filters, and the stellar job they did screwing up the design, I'd never suggest 1 anyhow.

It would be funny tho if after all that work trying to win the contract, they weren't able to achieve the original goal :)
