255/85 R16 Owners Experience

I was thinking about doing that (asking other companies to produce that size)... but I think I'll stick to KM2's...

 

No such thing as a flat even turn around here. lol I think speed and sharpness of the turn has something to do with it. If I drive like a normal person it usually won't be an issue but if I take a turn just a hair faster than normal it will probably activate the brakes. The sharper the turn the more likely it is to activate the brakes as well.

I drove the truck lifted with the stock tires on it for a few months before I switched the tires and this wasn't an issue until I got the bigger tires on it so I don't think that a stretched ABS wire is the culprit, especially considering that the suspension isn't traveling any further than it was designed to with or without the lift installed.

 

Sounds like you need to have the yaw sensor calibrated.

 

Anyone have a definite answer as to when Cooper will bring out the ST Maxx in a 255/85/16?

I gave Cooper Tire Co. a call yesterday. I had to go through 3 different people until I got a half assed response... "They'll be out sometime in the 4th quarter. "

I've been waiting for a while for this to happen and I keep hearing its further and further away. I need new tires ASAP and I like the look and tread design of the ST Maxx. I did some research and I found that back in 2010 and 2011 people were chatting on other forums discussing this very topic, and how Cooper tire said they would be out soon. Now that's 3 years ago and they still aren't here! Am I hoping for something that's not going to happen or will they actually make a 255/85/16 in the ST Maxx? Some one help me here.

 

Cooper talking heads only will tell us "4th Quarter" which is wishful thinking for October 1 through December 31st. And this is just what the sales folks were told.

It is easy:
1) Buy the BFG KM2 if you can tolerate a mud terrain pattern on the street (those same open gaps that make them so good in rocks and mud make them mediocre on pavement), or
2) get the Cooper ST which is a proper all-terrain tire. Quite good on the pavement and off road, but a step back in ugly mud compared to a M/T, or...
3) If you need extreme sidewall protection in a M/T tire the Toyo Open Country M/t is top dog for someone driving in sharp rocks frequently.

I am going with the Cooper ST because this makes sense for Me. But the KM2's mounted on 1st gen alloy wheels would be nice too!

I currently have the ST's in a 255/85 but need new tires. I have thought about just going with KM2's but with as much daily driving I do I'm not sure I should. The tread blocks look to be a little less aggressive on the ST Maxx (compared to ST) but that's from me looking at pictures. I like the ST because it is a true all terrain but I kinda want something different and the only AT options in this size are the ST and hopefully soon the ST Maxx

I did not have to remove the rear mud flap. That was tore off the day after I put these on, while driving around the jobsite. I drove off a concrete slab and into some very loose gravel/sand and they did not make the trip. HAHA

 

The good thing about stock suspension: It's easy to stuff the tires to check for clearance issues.

Have any of y'all re-calibrated your speedometer and odometer. I'm currently using my GPS for thise things, but would like to get the truck accurate

 

3" in the rear, 2.5" in the front. It's the ToyTec Ultimate Lift Kit.

 

Got my Cooper ST tires mounted on the new Method Doublestandard wheels today, they look good! The 8" wide wheels are not ideal but this width IS legitimate for this tire per Cooper.

 

Thanks for posting this and all the other pics. Answers so many questions! It's kind of amazing that you can put a 33" tire on these trucks with stock suspension. I guess stock wheels are the key.

I'm hoping I can find someone local with this setup so I can see what the ride is like. I was sold on duratracs for their hybridness, not sure if I could deal with KM2s on the daily commute or on ~4 hour road trips.

 

I was surprised at how rigid the ride was at first. Then I noticed that the tires were at 55psi. I dropped it down to the tacomaworld suggested psi (35) and it is a little softer, but nothing really noticeable. The km2s have an "E" load rating so they are pretty stiff, which is why I bought them. Took a curvy paved road out to where the pictures were taken, and they handled the curves great. (And I like to drive FAST) The road noise is almost non existent. I was surprised at how quiet they were. Not just for M/T. This truck is my daily driver, so I made pretty sure these tires would work before I bought them.

As far as wheels, I have heard that first gen tacoma wheels would also work. Their offset is .75" less, and I could see that fitting. If my wheel well liner wasn't loose i don't think I would have any clearance issues with those, either. I might try and find some .75" wheel spacers just to widen my stance a bit.

Hope this answered some questions for people looking to try these tires.

 

How many people running this size have regeared??

 

Still have stock gears. Not terrible, but really wish I had the coin to re-gear. My last truck was a Cummins with 4.10s, so the Tacoma has felt "under powered" since day one.
