Speedo calibration

Is there a way to recalibrate the speedo and odometer to compensate for larger tires?

but at that price it's not really worth it... I'd just use a GPS, like on your smart phone and learn what is what basically. I chose to get an Ultragauge and have it calibrated to read correctly. Doesn't fix the speedo, but you can put it near your gauge cluster and use it as one, plus it tells you a lot more than the gauge cluster and can even read codes if needed. About a 1/4 the price of the calibrator too.

The software is so easy to use if you run the USB cable down to your coin pocket you can plug it into your laptop and easily re calibrate as your tires wear.

 

Ahhhhh. Didn't think about that! I installed 2010 FJ wheels and stock size FJ tires, 265/70/17 Firestone AT. I can probably use an FJ speedo gear and get it right on. Thanks!!!

A larger tire actually may fix the too fast speedo with stock tires?!

Stock tires (265/70-16) will read 65 mph, but be going a true 63 (per GPS)... With a 1" taller tire (265/75-16), 65 will be what the speedo reads when you are going 65 (per GPS)!

 

I've read that also, I am going to need to buy one of these anyway from just getting done re-gearing though ;-\

 

I didn't know we were talking about such a smaller change in tire size. Like DavidK said, I'll bet your speedo is actually pretty close to spot on right now. I'd check it with a gps and see.

 

newer tacos, you can move the speedo sensor to the tcase if i recall correctly. wyatt (awsumdc) did it.

as for older, i put 31.5's on mine, and it became MORE accurate. so i ahvent messed with it.

 

2nd gens with the manual tranny already have the sensor in the tcase. Only autos have it at the wheels.

 

so just change little gear?

 

The manuals can do that, but from what that other thread said, not many fit and even then he was still like 7 mph off at 70 and I think he said he was only about 10 mph off at 70 before so not much gain. I don't think it was worth the trouble for him.

 

According to my gps, a 6 mo old Nuvi 2555 the speedo was correct with the stock tires and now is about 3 mph slow at 65 gps speed. Not much I agree but I'd like to have it right in or a little fast. Guess I should verify my gps speed indication.

 

Per GPS? I have two GPS units and they read 2 MPH difference between each other. Both are Garmin's. Speedometer may not be exact on the Tacoma but also the GPS's are not always perfect either.

 

I had a Mio GPS first, and now have a Tom Tom... it says I am going the same speed as the Mio did... ? I think I also checked with my handheld Garmin eTrex...

 

Did you set them side by side to see if they were the same? I could go maybe ten miles with them both the same and then two MPH difference then one MPH and then back to the same. One of them was changing and not staying accurate.

 

I checked the speedo again with my phone using Waze. It agreed with the Niuvi 2555 speedo is showing a little slow. According to the Toyota parts guy and my vin, my truck has 3:72 rears and used a driven 28:11 gear. He wanted $40 for a 29:11 gear. I took the part number to a friend at a Lexus dealer. $22 from him. Apparently the Toyota guy was behind on his house payment. I ordered the gear from Lexus. I'll post how I make out when it comes in next week.

 

No, as one replaced the other... I drive to 65 on the Tacoma speedometer and look at the GPS... and compare. With stock tires (265/70-16), the GPS showed I was going 63 (ie. the truck speedo read too fast). With 265/75-16 tires they matched. The new GPS reads the same as the old when the truck speedo says 65.... ie. 65.

 

I also have the speedo reading +2 mph compared to the GPS but oddly enough, the trip/odometer is right on the money with the mileage markers. It was dead on the tenth for over 10 miles coming to work every day checking it out and also out on road trips for longer distances than that along I-10. Oh, running 265/70/16s..............guess I'd rather have the mileage correct rather than speedo if both can't be. That way the mpg math works out and there's a 2 mph cushion that could possibly keep you from getting pulled over.

 

I have also found this. I am running 33's and have a 9% difference on the odo compared to gps but only a 6% on the speedo. I think the factory set the odo to match up and intentially set the speedo to read 1 to 2 mph high so you have that cushion.
