I was wondering if any body pulls a camper with there tacoma? If you do what size is it and what is the weight of the camper you pull? thanks

do yall think a my reg cab 4 cyl. 4x4 could pull a pop up? i know im rated at 3500 lbs. so i guess i may have just answered my own question as long as the camper is rated under 3500

 

As long as the camper is less than 3500 lbs you should be good to go. DO NOT excede the tow rating, they are there for a reason.

Check the Tacoma Towing Bible stickied at the top of the technical section for anything else you might need to know about towing safely.

 

Maverick491 If I found a camper that is in the pulling capasity, yet the hitch weight is 715 lbs. yet the rating for my truck is only 650 lbs. Is there any thing I can do to increase my hitch weight rateing?

Generally, the Deep Cycle battery is mounted on the tongue, depending on if the camper in question uses a single or dual battery set-up, you could save 50-100 lbs of tongue weight by re-locating the batterie(s) to a secure location inside the coach, preferably directly over the axle(s). If you would be un-comfortable with the wiring involved in doing that, most RV dealers would not charge a rediculous amount to do that re-location.

If the camper in question uses a dual 20lb propane bottle set-up, you could switch that to a single 30 lb bottle or even to a single 20lb bottle and save between 10 and 20 lbs on the tongue weight there also.

Electric tongue jack also weighs more than a manual crank jack, so if it has that option you could also swap that out.

Now just to clarify, are you reading your weight ratings from the cabinate door of the actual unit you are looking at or from a brochure? And are you reading the un-loaded vehicle weight or the GVWR of the trailer?

The reason I ask is it is really un-likely that a trailer would be built with a tongue weight of 715 lbs, but a GVWR of 6500lbs or less. If it is built like that, it is technically not built correctly, and I'd caution you to consider a different trailer. Most manufacturers build to the accepted standard of tongue weight being 10% of total weight.

All that said, if you re-locate the battery(s) then it should keep your tongue weight close enough to the accepted weight requirement that a good quality Weight Distribution hitch and Dual cam sway controll should enable you to tow it safely.

 

Thanks for your help. The GVWR for the trailer is 7715 lbs. but figured that with the dry weight only being 3920 lbs. I could take what i wanted with me and still stay under the 6500 lbs. It isn't a regular travel trailer it is a toy hauler and even with the weight of two big ATVs i still have right at a thousand lbs. for the other stuff. Thanks

I've got a nice camper that fits nicely in the back of my 2x4 taco quad cab - my problem is the front hold downs. i cannot mount abelly bar on account of the gas tank and I can't see another way tp hold it down at the front.
any ideas/

 

I'm planning to build a small camper and I'm adding the extra d-rings to the front of bed. I'm going to have access doors from inside the camper to the space in front of the wheel wells so I can attach tie downs to the d-rings. The method in the link here mounts the d-rings to the frame so they'd be solid place to mount he camper tie downs. Got pics of your camper?
