Drive both. Pick the one you like. We planned on getting a manual when we bought our tacoma. We test drove it and both of us were bummed about pretty much every aspect of the 6sp manual. We both thought the stick was in an awkward place (too far forward and too low), the shifting was horribly notchy, and it was very difficult to drive smoothly. I've had many manual vehicles from several eras and they were all better. We're plenty happy with the auto.

3 years actually. Had my license since I was 14. I was talking more about growing up around it and seeing the problems with automatics verses manuals.

Just a curious question, what state was that in? I know you can get a license at an early age for farming and stuff like that, but did you have an actual license @14?

This has probably been said before but it is a matter of personal opinion. I drive both manual and auto regularly, although all of my own cars have been manuals. Most of the time I love the feel, feedback, and engagement of driving a manual. But sometimes, particularly when I'm driving through hilly, bumper-to-bumper traffic in the bay area, I wish I had an auto. I would hate to drive a manual regularly in San Francisco, but a lot of people manage to do it.

It comes down to which one you think you would miss more; the comfort and refinement of an auto, or the pleasure and excitement of a manual.

EDIT: The 6-speed in the taco is not exactly exciting to use, but it's predictable and easy to get used to. Doesn't compare to my WRX's (current/soon to be former) 5-speed though.

Farm use, I suspected that....so really not a full and complete road driving license, well, except for the 30 mile rule....

I have had both a manual Taco and now an automatic, prefer the automatic, again, personal choice, over the years I have had mostly manuals, drag racing, then road racing, the biggest drawback to an automatic is if your battery pukes and you are stuck in the middle of nowhere, it sucks, with a manual, normally, a little push, and you are good to go again, automatic, you need access to another battery for jumping...

    To each his/her own...

In my opinion driving a manual is fun at times but for an everyday commute to work in traffic especially stop n go an auto is the way to go.

I love manual transmissions. I've had probably 30 different vehicles and only 4 have been automatics. That said my current truck as well as the last 05 double cab I had are autos. I've had tons of seat time in my brother in law's 05 6 speed and I honestly prefer the auto. Not to mention they get far better mileage and my commute is 46 miles one way. If you're looking at a 4 cylinder truck I wouldn't even consider an auto. My first 05 was a 2.7 5 speed 4x4 and I loved it. But with the V6 I prefer the auto. Drive both and see which one you like better.

    Need suggestions
Manual gives you more control, allows you to control your mpgs better, is much more fun offroad, and is much more manly. Autos are better in traffic though

People who seriously believe driving a manual truck vs an auto truck makes you more manly have manly issues

The same shit everyone else has.
When I was shopping for my Tacoma, I drove both an auto and a 6 speed V6 4wd.

The auto felt like a dog and there was zero control over the power. It really felt much easier to drive with the 6 speed.

Ive almost always owned a manual vehicle since Ive started driving. If you like get in your vehicle and just go, an auto is the way to go. If you want to get in your vehicle and DRIVE it, a manual is the way to go.

If I were younger, I'd choose the manual. As I get older, I lean twards the automatics.

Oh shit, I have a manual.

I love Manuals, with that said, remember....

    :quickdraw:
When your bugging out after its all gone to hell....Its easier to drive and shoot with an automatic, additionally if you take a round to your arm, you can still drive.
