Access Cab platform

Hope this isn't a repost, found this video tonight watching woodworking videos on youtube. Thinking of making it myself when time allows.

I spied a guy on here that goes by cold iron that did something similar and picked his brain about it. I am a finish carpenter that worked as a furniture and cabinet builder for a few years and have had a hard time NOT justifying this. The jump seats are honestly useless unless my little half Asian sister-in-laws want to ride along haha

 

That sucks.....

And I mean.... the newer trucks don't have the fold down seats like the older ones do.

This is my 2007 access cab area with Husky floor mat.

 

Where did you get that and how much?

Thats crazy taht they took away the fold down seats. my seats are never up unless i have to take two ppl somewhere.

 

After doing some research... it looks like its might be discontinued. All the links I come across are 'dead' or blank or show floor liners instead of seat liners.
I actually got mine locally, but it was years ago.

Cool thanks ill check that out. I thought of just getting a piece of carpet form the lowes/home depot and cut it to fit.

 

I had some custom mats made. This is 2008 X-Runner.

 

I seen those in another tread they look really good. Are those aftermarket seat cover?

 

The seat covers are from Roadwire.com.

 

They're pretty sweet looking. How do you like having an x runner? Not my cup of tea but think they look awesome.

 

I did something similar a few months ago. Completely removed the rear seats down to the sheet metal, then I welded up a frame out of 3/4" square tubing to go against the rear wall and some hinged plywood for a big shelf. To be honest I think it's pretty ugly but it certainly makes the space much more useful.


Before I installed the bottom hinged shelf, the section here is bolted to the cab in several places so it's very secure, and I welded a few cargo tie down loops on the sides and bolted two in the middle:

Personally I think the finished product is ugly as sin, tho I dig his creativity. I would carpet it to match or just go with black/gray.

 

Damn how must does that monstrosity weigh?

 

LOL just found this thread by searching the internet looking for the best carpet match for the Tacoma for the end caps on the platform. This weekend plan on finishing it up (for the most part) and will post here when I can. I was able to mount my hi lift jack in the rear console area and that was one goal.

What is with using Keystone Ice for beer in that video?! Great video other than that. Fixed it (for you Mobilemech ;-)

I really like the truck. I bought in new in Nov of 07. I would do it again.

Hope to have it finished this weekend. Hi in the teens but at least it is teens above zero!

Got the Hi Lift mounted good thing it really isn't 48" long she just makes it in there as it is.



The top of the beam sits between the factory jack and frame pretty tight. Used the hold down for the tool kit around the beam and no rattles at all.



When it was all lined up I drilled a hole in the end of the maple wood frame and used a carriage bolt through the base with a hand knob from ACE to make it as tool less as possible.



Need to put everything back together now and should be done with it.



Have half a dozen coats of spar varnish on it since that picture, couldn't bring myself to paint maple and oak even if it is ply LOL. But I wanted to use up what I had on hand including the hinges.



I really like that metal one above and do not feel it is ugly at all. Machinery grey paint and it would be killer IMO.

 

Cold Iron..I like your setup.. can you give me the measurements? I wont plan putting no hi jack but will use the section for other stuff... will be using plywood and marine grade carpet for cover the just the top section..

 

My dad and I am going in half on a MIG welder tomorrow so that is something I have considered as well. May do a metal frame and wood access doors for light weight... Im all talk right now though so we will see I guess haha

Everything is just butt joined and glued and screwed. There are drop legs on the underside of the plywood which are 1x3's on hinges for support too. The top platform dimensions can vary in how much you want to limit the movement of your seats. The width of my platform is 52" including edge banding. I started with the max depth I could but after using it for a couple of weeks the girlfriend complained about not being able to put her seat at full extension so I ended up cutting it down some. I put a lip on the drivers side to help hold things in, figured I open it from that side 99% of the time so only needed it on that side. I lay a 2' x 4' anti-slip router\sanding mat on top to help keep things from sliding around. And a bench cushion when using it for the dog. We both can get pretty muddy after hunting in the woods or fields, I wanted something easy to clean and not pickup cockle burrs and prickers so skipped the carpet. Obviously you can customize it for what ever your needs are. Hope that helps.
