Yeah. That came through as a recommendation on my FB feed. So I posted the link-then started looking around here. Low and behold, i found the TW version.

I would like to go sometime. Go from Badwater up to Telescope Peak.

A tip, give yourself a little slack and buy yourself two extra connectors. A pair of channel locks is important too.

You can get up to another 6-10 inches of extra slack by letting the cable be a little loose in a few areas along the run, if you mess up while soldering, you can cut some off at the end.

Once I got the connectors soldered together (I used the fancy silver ones), It didn't work the first time, I didn't get enough of the shield around the sides and probably had a cold weld, I gambled a bit and heated up the outside a little more and got the solder to flow better.

I was lucky and didn't melt the insulation too badly.

When I went to tighten everything, I found out that flux had flowed down the size a little and made it tough to get the outside of the connector down around the center shaft. Having two channel locks to tighten them together was helpful.

Work fast and work clean, it helps to practice on a shorter length of cable if you've never soldered before.

No help on the winch, though, some folks here have already ditched the Onboard Air in favor of a CO2 Tank. sytfu510 uses 20lbs tank and he just gets it refilled for a couple of bucks once a year, and he makes several big trips a year. It's a lot faster and more convenient when you want fill up multiple trucks like he does.

OBA is good but there's a little more maintenance, but for longevity is a good overall choice.

 

Don't waste your $ on a shittybilt winch. Some of us have made that mistake and have since upgraded to Warn. Don't skimp out on something as important as that.

I have that same OBA set up, and it's okay. I got it for a lot cheaper than what it goes for, so I guess it's okay. The CO2 tanks are really legit like what Stan said. Just know that it's going to cost more and you'll have to keep paying for refills. But it works fast as shit and really no other downsides other than cost

Hmm yeah I know Warn is better. I just didn't know if Smittybilt was that bad.

Well how do you like your OBA? I was going to use it for lockers and for the tires. If I had front and rear lockers already then I would definitely go C02, but I was hoping to knock out 2 birds with 1 stone.

I have the XRC8 Smittybilt and basically rebuilt it to pack in new, higher quality grease and to seal the solenoid. The issue is that the solenoid gets corroded inside and so you'll go to power in and it won't stop - that's what Jerry's issue was (he had synthetic line so he was able to cut it before doing any damage). My smittybilt has been fine since, but I always test it with a knife handy before any wheeling trip to make sure it still works fine.

My plan is to eventually get an arb air locker in the rear, so I'll have an arb pump to work that and to fill tires as well. I like the idea of hooking it up to a tank so then if the pump fails I could still air up a little bit with whatever's left in the tank. We'll see what happens.

 

Yea I had a situation with my shittybilt similar to Jerry's. But I didnt have synthetic line, so when it wouldn't stop reeling in, it kept going and my front bumper caved in a little.





My OBA does the job. It's slow, but it works. And if you go the OBA route, then yea don't get anything less than 100% duty cycle since it'll need to be on for a while to fill you up. Not to mention if you are lending air for someone else. I'm finally adding my locker in this month (hopefully) so I'll be teeing off the tank for plumbing.

I see you've got the little nozzle there on the front bumper. I saw a similar setup on MrGrimm's truck during a trail meet in San Diego. He's also got a nozzle on the rear bumper, I don't remember if you have that, too, or not, MJ. I really want to do that for my OBA setup, looks so clean and is super easy!

Definitely makes it easier when filling up. I actually have 2 hoses so sometimes I'll fill up 2 at a time
