My mother has been discharged from the hospital!!!!!!

She's going home! I already prepped the room on the first floor of her house (no more stairs for her) so she's good to go.

She will also be receiving speech & physical therapy but she has improved faster than expected!

:) :)

Now that I have a bit of relief in my life let me ask this question.

I am considering going with a 4" Max trac spindle lift for my Prerunner. Of course, I would set my 5100's @ zero. For the rear since I already have extended leangth 5100's all I would do is add a tapered steel block to compensate for the height.

Also, I would have to go with 1.25" Spidertrax adapters for the rear wheels. I read that the Spindles bring the front wheels out .75" each so the Spidertrax can more than compensate.

And my FJ wheels will work with them!!

Am I missing sonething?

Let me know your opinions on this. I forgot who but someone on the Florida BS thread is running spindle spacers.

I would love to see some side profile pics, or any pics.

Though I was always skeptical I have read nothing but good regarding Spidertrax. I asked PMK about his & Paul said that he loves them. He also PM'd me this:
READ ON:

In another thread, I chronicled how we performed an FEA (Finite Element Analysis) on a Spidertrax spacer (1.5") and a factory Moab wheel.

"I recently installed a set of 1.5" Spidertrax spacers. However, prior to doing so, I took one of them, along with my spare wheel, into our engineering lab.

We modeled both in 3D using the latest NX CAD software. We did this by reverse engineering. That means taking all dimensions and determining the materials.

We identified the wheel material as alloy 356-T6. The spacers are made from 6061-T6 alloy. 356-T6 has tensile strength of 30,000 PSI. 6061-T6 has a tensile strength of 45,000 PSI. This means that in reference to the basic materials, the spacer is 50% stronger than the wheel for a given thickness, and the spacer is much thicker in section.

We ran an extremely complex finite element analysis of both to determine where peak stresses are and where each component is most likely to fail. The result is what I expected. In short, spacers are not the weak link. The wheel itself is 2x more likely to fail under severe loading than the well designed spacer.

Now, let me qualify our findings. Our corporate engineering team has designed significant portions of the Airbus A350 landing gear system. We engineered the latest landing gear system for the Boeing CH-47. Our hardware is on the F-35, F/A-18, F-16 and a number of other aircraft.

This same engineering team has analyzed the Spirdertrax spacers and concluded that they are extremely strong, stronger than they need to be. Over engineered. These spacers are utterly safe if installed properly. Like an offset wheel, they may accelerate bearing wear, but the offset is so little as to be of no great significance.

I installed the spacers very carefully. Not knowing specifically what brand and type of threadlocker compound was provided with the spacers, I tossed it and used Loctite 271 Red. Each spacer was torqued to recommended specs in a star pattern. The wheel was then installed and torqued to 95 lb/ft.

After about 150 miles, I pulled off the rear wheels and checked the spacer lug nut torque. No change... I'll re-check torque at each tire rotation.

Installed correctly, Spidertrax wheel spacers are not only safe, they're stronger than the wheels you bolt to them."

I didn't mention that we found areas of stress concentration in the factory wheels. We were able to pinpoint the most likely location of failure. I'll explain where that is...

The Factory Moabs have spotfaces milled into the wheel hub to provide clearance for assembly washers used during manufacture to secure the brake rotors on the hub prior to final assembly. Using an endmill, each lug hole is spotfaced on the inside (think of a spotface as a shallow counterbore). The edges and corners of these spotfaces are quite sharp. This is where the FEA predicted the greatest concentration of stress. Unfortunately, this is also adjacent to the where the studs transmit all rotational torque into the wheel. The failure to radius edges and corners is what leads to stress concentration. If your Moab is going to fail at the hub, it will crack at a spotface.

In short, Tom and Eddie at Spidertrax have designed and engineered a very high quality spacer, that if properly installed, will provide you with many years of problem free and safe use.

I'm sold!

First and foremost, glad to hear about your mother.

Now on to the TW related response...Spidertrax spacers are good. Spindle lift is good for your PreRunner...sounds like you're good to go...

I'm really looking at getting an OME lift...it's only 2.5", but it'll be a better ride on road and off...

Just don't know if I wanna drop $1100+install for it tho...

Thank you Dan! :D

Being the car/truck guy that I am, & most of us on this forum are, I have looked into what suspension I would go with when ever I buy my next Tacoma which will be 4x4 (WAAAAY down the road, LOL). I can tell you that OME is my excat choice for it.

The ride quality is awesome. I happened to ride in a customers truck ('06 Prerunner with the same lift, including the complete Dakar leaf packs) & I can say that it rides less harsh than my 5100's @ 2.5. He had 265/75r16 Duratracs which are about as stiff as the BFG's so it was a fair comparison. It's hard to find someone that does NOT like OME.

My Prerunner is my first truck ever & it has been a learning experience between what I have learned on this forum & what I've done on my own.

The advantage of a Prerunner (suspension wise) is that I don't have to worry about front diff vibes & CV angles which is why if I were 4x4 I would go with the exact set-up you are looking at. I know that you can do a diff drop but it doesn't do much on our 2nd gens & it makes the front diff more vulnerable (if you wheel hardcore) to getting damaged.

I agree on the money also. It's quite a bit spent in one shot but when ever you do it, you will be happy. If I may suggest, start setting money aside every month & you'll get there before you know it. Plus, your truck looks awesome as is so you can atleast enjoy it like that for now.

I don't know where your town is but my dad lives in Tarpon Springs, Fl. Every winter we go to Howard Park which is 3 small islands connected by a causeway. Beautiful sunsets & dolphins are abundant.

Every year I am SHOCKED at how many out-of-state plates I see there. Plus, some of the Florida tags are rentals. I can honestly say that at any given time in that park/beach 70% of the people there are foreigners (either from other states or Canada).

Hey now,

I will be one of those "Sno-Birds" in 17 days ;).....and unless I can talk the better half into a "full-time" gig it will be only a few months at a time....For now....:D

Sadly, the Tacoma will stay garaged in NH for this visit so any of my outside "adventures" will be as a passenger with a few of the FT.Myers groups................unle$$ I fall upon a great Toyota deal...having a "TOY" on either end of the EastCoast would not hurt my feelings...

BTW, if you are young enough to joke about being a snowbird, you aren't the snowbirds we worry about.

Man. I can relate to THAT!!! I keep saying "that's it" & it's NEVER it!!

HAHA!

Hey man, I was born in Jersey. My dad (from Greece) & my mom (from Cuba) met & married in Joysie!

They were snowbirds at one point until they finally settled here.

thank you for that.......I think....:p...yes, we are younger than most Sno-birds...park made an exception for us because my dad was previous owner
This is our 2nd time around...we were in Clermont for the BOOM-BUILD '89-97 and now FT.Myers will be the 2nd/retirement-play home

Not gunna lie peter, I read the first few sentences of your post above and gave up.

Not sure for the 2nd gens, but you may need extended brake lines. Also K9 is running lift spindles. As far as wheel spacers, I had them on the front of my tan truck but not the rear. I liked the front tires sticking out an inch out either side than the rear.
Hope that helped and glad your mom is doing better.

Fink, a while back Peter questioned the integrity of running Spidertrax spacers. What he posted today is a copy of the topic from one of the other off-road websites. Bottom line is some aerospace guys took their high tech machines at work, figured out what aluminum alloy the rims were made from and drew them in a design program that could calculate stress and strength. The also did stress analysis on the Spidertrax. Determination was the spacer is stronger than the wheel.

Very pleased to hear your mom is doing better. Al the best with her new living arrangement.

As for the truck...Yes I am still running 1 1/4" Spidertrax on all four corners. I was finally able to get my wheels and tires balanced plus installed last week. I was discussing the idea of raising the truck more with a set of spindles, but wifey asked to hold off for a bit and reminded me that my build was to be more Raptor than Redneck. The reason I wanted to try spindles is the tires slightly rub the mudflap in slow turns. Consider also, the spacer is moving the wheel aft when turned, and I have Camburg upper arms that add castor, pulling the wheel further aft.

If I go forward with more lift, I would like to do all Camburg parts, and build my own springs from a set off a junkyard truck. I'll probably build the springs regardless. If needed I can mod my ICONs to longer travel and pick it up more.

FWIW, there are some real good deals right now on ICONs and the Maxtracs spindles. Not free but pretty good markdowns.

DAN, BTW, when we were at Fosters, you mentioned my truck having 2 1/2. Apologies, since I was thinking 2 1/2 lift instead of 3?? that they sell, not the shock body diameter.

Overall. wouldn't mind building true prerunner type truck. Just gets expensive quick with all the suspension and body panels plus high clearance bumpers. The Solo Motorsports trucks are BA.
