I have 2014 dbl cab, long bed, v6 and the limited package. "sticker" says," outside temp. gauge. It doesn't. Dealer ordered new mirror, installed same.didn't work. They called Toyota. Seems new computer doesn't play nice with temp. gauge. I called Toyota they wanted sticker. Sent copy. Waiting for reply.

I went to the dealer today and was told I didn't have one.

Although it was listed on my spec sheet.

I knew before I picked up my '14 TRD OR that it didn't have the auto dimming mirror, and it wasn't listed on the sticker. I just find it odd and annoying that Toyota would get rid of a feature that everyone liked and replace it with one that won't even function for a large number of buyers. I do a lot of travel over long distances though mountains, etc and always liked sending pics of the freezing temps to my wife to terrorize her. I also live on a mountain where the climate is often significantly different up where my house is VS downtown, and it was nice to know when I was crossing into possible freezing conditions.
I lived without one before, and I'll survive without one now. It's just a feature that I'll miss, and I may install an aftermarket unit at some point. I have one kicking around from a Suburban, I just need to get around to it.

TLDR: I'm not mad, just disapointed.

    Hey guys,
Just took my console off last night, Mine has the same connector but has 3 wires, green, white and red. Temp sensor is present in the grille area. Will I still need a special adapter to get a gentex mirror? I'm looking for homelink and temp. compass is optional since its always on my entune screen.

How do you get the compass on your entune screen? Does that mean you have nav?

Yes I have the premium entune JBL nav. The compass is always located on the upper left of the nav screen.
I would like the temp sensor to work, because the HD weather isn't real time..its updated every 10-15 mins

I think the easy answer is that no one has demonstrated that the OE temp sensor can be used for the mirror. A Gentex mirror can be purchased that has a sensor that can be mounted near the front of the truck. The hard part is running the wires and that isn't that hard. As you have seen, all the wires for power and ground are already there.

I would like to install an autodimming mirror with compass only, I'm not that concerned about temp. A few questions. Where/how do I find that wiring harness in my headliner without ripping it down/tearing it? Can it be used to hook up a mirror with compass? I'm assuming it only needs power?

Almost gave up on this, but eventually got in touch with Toyota corporate. After a back and forth for a while, I ended up with a $250 credit for any parts/service from Toyota. Not exactly the value of a mirror, but since it was not listed on my window sticker, I didn't have much ground to stand on. My only argument was that it was listed in the brochure and I felt I should have got one.

So if you are in the same boat as me, Toyota might do something about it.

I don't have a Tacoma, but lots of mirrors!
    Hi all,

I just registered here on the recommendation of a customer of mine who just bought a Gentex compass/temp/Homelink mirror from me for his '14. While I personally don't own a Tacoma, I've been selling & installing new & used rear view mirrors going on 15 years now (in Toyota's & many other vehicles) and would like to post some info that should hopefully help clarify a few things regarding the mirrors/wiring in the trucks.

Here's what I've found...pretty much every 2009-2014 Tacoma I've dealt with has had the 14 pin plug above the overhead console, but what wires are actually in place has changed a bit over the years.

2009-2012 models had multiple wires in the plug. For these trucks, adding pretty much any kind of rearview mirror (except for one with temperature display) can be plug & play with the appropriate adapter to plug into the 14 pin plug. Also, I've found many 09-12 Tacoma's that are not only prewired for the backup camera-in-rearview mirror feature, but Toyota went so far as to put the camera in the tailgate...but left out the rearview mirror with camera display! So on these, pop the mirror in and you're done. And if yours doesn't happen to have the camera in the tailgate, but does have the wiring in place, then it's a matter of adding the mirror & factory tailgate camera.

For 2013, it's a similar scenario to 2009-2012, but Toyota added a wire to the 14 pin plug that is a digital signal coming from the AC Amplifier module in the dash. This digital signal is used by the optional autodim/compass/temp/backup camera mirror or the same with Homelink so as to be able to display the temperature in the mirror. This differs from previous models of mirrors that used an analog two wire temperature sensor. Again, as with the 09-12 models, in most cases, adding the mirror can be plug & play - you can either go with the (very overpriced) mirror from the dealer or go with a GENK3320S (autodim/compass/temp/backup camera display) or GENK3350S (same but with Homelink) and the appropriate wiring adapter to plug into the factory 14 pin plug.

For the 2014 models, there are only 3 wires in the plug...ignition, battery, ground. Without doing additional wiring, you're limited to an autodim mirror, with/without compass, with/without Homelink. If you wish to add the temperature display, you will need to run two wires from the mirror to the front of the vehicle & install a temperature sensor.

One other thing...most of the autodim mirrors out there are made by Gentex and MagnaDonnelly - none of the carmakers actually make the mirrors. Gentex by far is more widely used than the Magna's, not just in Toyota's, but in many vehicles from just about all the carmakers. Gentex makes a line of mirrors for the aftermarket, and also makes some mirrors specifically for the carmakers. There numerous different variations - too many to list, lol! Also - the quality of Gentex mirrors is far superior to the Magna mirrors. I've had a fairly decent amount of problems with Magna mirrors over the years (they go under various names - MagnaDonnelly, Donnelly, CIPA, and 20/20), but the Gentex mirrors have been rock-solid since I first started my business nearly 15 years ago.

Please feel free to email me with any questions or post a message here and I'll do my best to help you guys out.

    Thanks!
    Bob Prim

I've been lurking over here since purchasing my 14 Tacoma a few months ago and am just now getting around to making some mods to it. The mirror is the first thing to get the upgrade.

I purchased a mirror off of Bob recently (ebay) and suggested he come on over and post what he knows about aftermarket mirrors and the installs into Tacoma trucks. Glad to see that he might be able to help some of us out.

That is awesome. Sory for all the questions but do you have a "ball park/round about" estimate of what someone would charge to install one of those?

Thank you again! You've been most helpful

So if I buy this kit, would the compass/homelink/auto dim features work by just plugging it in to the existing wiring ("plug and play")?

Could I do this as a clean temporary solution, and then run the temperature sensor and wiring at a later time?

This may be a no brainer question but I just want to be sure.
