Thats crazy. The trades here are crazy, Just starting as a pipefitting, electrician or plumbing , etc apprentice with no experience you will make 20+ dollars an hour. Now if your working out of town they pay an Out of town Expense per day @ 100+ dollars (tax-free). This is why in Central Canada(sask & alberta not so much manitoba) its so booming. 20 year old kids that own homes and 60+k trucks

If its not the trades its Oil rig this and Potash mine that.

Commission jobs (and tipping jobs) still have a statute that requires that the total money earned must be equal to or greater than the minimum wage (in California).

The thing with commission jobs is that if your sales are not high enough to carry you well over minimum wage, you won't be working there for very long.
When I worked at Radio Shack in 1987, my book wage was $3.35/hr.
    I made over $40k/year.
Min was $2.90 when I got my first job.

California minimum is currently $8, with exceptions for some student and farm positions.

Tipped employees can get jacked because of the way the laws are written... and the law is why employers prefer to go with the socialist "pool tipping" thing where they stick a tip jar on the counter at Starbucks and EVERY employee gets a share of it, even if they didn't do jack shit and provided horrible service.
Sally works her ass off and makes $12/hour in tips, Brenda and Judy don't make shit, but now all three get paid $8/hour and the manager only pays the girls $4/hour because Sally's tips covered everyone to the minimum.

It's bullshit, and why even when I'm paying with plastic, I ALWAYS tip in cash and make sure I hand it to the server, rather than leaving it on the table, or adding it to the CC bill at the register.

Compared to other oil-exporting countries... well, let's just say your income isn't at Kuwaiti levels yet. :)

Some cities have enacted a "living wage" code that exceeds the state minimum. I think there are a couple of cities in the bay area that are at or above $10, and there has been talk of doing that in LA for hotel workers in the LAX area.

But honestly... not enough? Minimum wage jobs are not and never have been about being careers. They are low-paying, non-skilled jobs that help a young person gain experience working in the real world and providing a few extra bucks while finishing school, they are a way for a housewife or retired person to supplement their income, and they are a way for a person who is unemployed to survive until they find a job in their profession.

If you feel that you are worth more, then go get a job that pays what you are worth. I did that when I moved out of fast food. I did that when I moved out of retail management. I did that when I moved out of aerospace. I did that when I moved out of traffic signal maintenance.

Not many people feel that their job pays "enough"... everyone wants more money and less work. That's life... but how much are you willing to pay for a Big Mac to support a minimum wage of $15/hour?
Higher wages = higher cost... it's called inflation. You will never get rich working for someone else, and you will never move ahead staying at the same job.

The trades pay quite well here too, if you are in an area and trade that has not been deflated by cheap labor from illegals.

The minimum wage is going to be what you get flipping burgers and greeting customers at Walmart and Home Depot.

    Why would it not last?

The government shutdown thread was allowed to remain open, and it crossed the line quite a few times.

I agree, a guy I work with doesn't think the 70k a year we get is enough. He is still collecting the equivalent of $10/hr and health ins. for his family from GM on top of his wages. And claims he can barely make it:confused:
