I have a 2013 Toyota Tacoma T-Force with Bilstein 5100 suspension (first truck/never towed) and am looking to buy a 1975 Datsun 280Z in Alabama...which will need to be towed back to Texas. The trip is a little over 9 hours. Will my truck handle the tow? The car is approximately 2700-2800 lbs. I've tried researching a little and couldn't find anything about towing with the Bilstein's...not even really sure it would make such a difference if any. If you have a link that I could read up on, that would be fine too so I don't have to waste your time explaining. Thank you in advance!

No problem at all. In fact, the stock suspension (TRD Bilsteins/Tokico shocks) is rather weak from the factory so adding some better shocks couldn't hurt you. If you have the tow package, you're rated for 6500lbs. I towed a 3000lbs trailer over 30 hours, I barely felt it back there except for the steep grades. However, if you plan on towing a lot, a new leaf pack or ride-right air bags could help a lot.

Just remember to put the trans in 4, not D. You'll be gear hunting in D, and that will get the transmission hot. Heat is what ruins all transmissions.

The constant shifting up and down ruins gas mileage also. I lot of people don't want to run it in 4 because they believe their fuel mileage will be worse. The truth is it will get better mileage towing if you put it in 4 instead of D.

What did you do for a lift in the rear and what tires are you running? The stock suspension is junk anyways so unless you lifted with blocks, you likely better equipped your truck for towing. If you're running huge tires and haven't regeared, and plan on towing near the listed capacity of the truck, you're putting a lot of extra strain on the drive train, specifically the transmission. Otherwise, there is no reason you can't tow with a lifted truck.

how heavy is the car trailer?

cool car!! i love the old Z's. if you are borrowing a cool alum car trailer..you will not have issues. if you are using some behemoth iron thing. things start to add up.

Thank you all for the information! I don't think I was as specific as I should have been though. (I have already found the information thanks to the links that were posted in here so no further explanation needed). I should have asked if I needed a transmission cooler, but from what I have read I'm good to go. Like The Traveler said..just keep it in 4.

aficianado - the trailer I am using is a UHAUL auto transport trailer that weighs 2,210 lbs. So I will be towing a combined weight of approximately 5,010 lbs.
