Rigid Industries SR-Q Back Up Light Kit Install

So I really wanted a set of aftermarket back up lights for my truck since the stockers are so weak. I did some searching and decided to try one of Rigid's products, the SR-Q Diffused Lens back up light kit. I did a search on here and found a thread offering the kits for sale, new, with a discount to TW members. I PM'd Chas of MRT, told him I wanted the standard lights, not flush mount, with the diffused lens. He's a cool dude and responds fairly quickly. He sent me a link to pay him via PayPal and after paying, I received my kit a few days later. When you open the box, you'll see this:

The kit comes with 2 lights, mounting hardware, wire harness, black covers and a 3 way illuminated switch. To install this kit, you will need the following tools:
Wire cutters/crimpers
Wire strippers
Scissors (to trim the wire loom)
1/2" Wrench
10mm Wrench
Power Drill with 1/2" bit
14mm Socket & Socket wrench
#5 Metric Allen wrench
Dremel with sanding bit
Pocket knife/utility knife
An old metal hanger
Electrical tape
~20 zip ties
1 self tapping sheet metal screw
1 small T-tap

When deciding where to mount the new lights, I decided to mount them using the two factory holes in the rear bumper, closest to the hitch.

Loosely bolt the mounts to the lights and then the lights to the bumper.

​

You're going to want to lay your wire harness down, front to back, before you begin to attach any connections.

I decided to start my wiring from the front to the back. If you look at the underside of the driver's side of your truck, there will be a big rubber grommet with a factory wiring harness coming through the cab floor. This is where I pulled my wires through to mount the relay and switch inside the cab. You're going to want to remove your door sill, dummy pedal and kick panel. For more room to work with, I used the 14mm socket and wrench, unbolted my seat and tilted it back towards the back seat. This will allow you enough room to pull the carpet back and gain access to that rubber grommet.

Remove the grommet and pull into the cab. You'll want to make a very small slit in the grommet so you can slide your wires through. Also, to do this, you'll have to remove the wires from the relay. Before doing so, take note of which color goes where in the relay:

To remove the wires from the relay, you will need a very slim flathead screwdriver or something that can fit in the channel between the wires and the relay (I used one of my girlfriend's bobby pins). Stick the screwdriver into the channel, angle the screwdriver away from the wires and while holding the screwdriver in place, pull the wires out of the relay. YOU ONLY NEED TO DO THIS FOR THE RED AND BLACK WIRES! Once they are removed from the relay, push them, one by one, through the slit you made in the grommet:

You can now replace the wires into the relay. REPLACE THE GROMMET. Set everything aside and now work on getting power into the cab. Bolt the red wire with the fuse to the positive terminal on your battery:

Remove the fuse from the fuse holder until install is complete. Get the metal hanger and snip it so it's just a metal stick. Using electrical tape, firmly tape the free end of the red wire to the hanger. You're going to use the hanger to snake the red wire into the cab using the grommet in the firewall on the lower driver's side.

Poke the hanger through the grommet and then get under the dash to pull the wire through. The power wire is fairly long so I decided to shorten it using butt connectors. Secure your relay under the dash and use some zip ties to loom your wires for your switch.

Use your drill and the self tapping screw to ground out your relay on the sheet metal behind the kick panel. (Skip this step if you do not want your switch to illuminate) To get the lights to turn on automatically when the transmission is in reverse, refer to this thread: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...anytime-rear-view-camera-switch-dash-mod.html and use your T-tap to tap into the skinny red wire on the harness by the fuse panel.

Hook your white wire up to the T-tap and run to your switch. Now you can drill the hole for your switch. I placed my switch under the dash, below the coin pocket so it's out of the way.

The instructions tell you to use a 1/2" drill bit for the hole but that is way too small. I used my Dremel with a sanding bit to widen the hole until the switch fit nice and snug.

Feed your wires through the hole from the back. Connect them to the switch according to the diagram in the instructions. Replace the fuse into the holder under the hood. Attach the rear connectors into the lights. The switch in the up position will run the lights with the truck on or off. The middle position will keep the lights off whether the truck is on/off or in reverse. The bottom position will only turn the lights on when the transmission is in reverse. Now that you've got the switch positions straight, press your switch into the dash.

Bolt your seat back up, snap all the plastic back together and clean up the cab. You're done in there. Now you need to run the harness back to the lights, keeping it out of the way of moving parts. I just ran mine along the factory harness on top of the driver's side frame rail. Make sure to use plenty of zip ties to secure the harness in place.

Being that this is a universal kit, by the time you get to the back of the truck, theres about 4 feet of wire left over. You can coil up the wires and zip tie them in place or you can snip them like so:

And use butt connectors to re-connect them like so:

Guess what, big boy? YOU'RE DONE. Put your tools away, wait for dark and marvel at your work.

Yes, they're expensive. Yes, you can install different lights for much cheaper. However, these are great lights with great output and they may very well outlast your Tacoma
