On a Fence - 275's or 285's?

I've researched this question up and down but can't seem to find a direct post on point so I thought I'd throw it out there. Thanks in advance to everyone for any advice.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out the pros and cons to purchasing 275's vs. 285's - specifically, Goodyear Silent Armor's 275/70/17s vs. Nitto TGs 285/70/17s for a 2.5" - 3" lift that I'm going to install. These will be mounted to a set of XD revolvers, so backspacing won't be an issue.

I guess my questions are:
1) Has anyone with 285's been able to keep their front mud flaps?
2) Am I looking at significant trimming with 285's?
3) Has anyone had both sizes and what did you think?

1) Yep, I have mine on their still and they do not rub
2) Nothing too significant, I just used a box cutter to trim away some of black plastic splash guard. Occasionally I'll rub the fender at the very tip, but I will be fixing that shortly

Make sure you have a backspacing of 4.5

I went through the same stuggle. My final decision is to go with 265/70/17's. I checked out a tacoma with a 3" spacer lift with mickey thompson mtz's at a dealership and that was all I needed. The tires didn't look small at all ( and I plan on ony going to 2.5 anyway). Now, if mickey thompson made the atz in 275/70/17, then that would be sex on wheels.

 

When i first got my truck, it had 285/75/16's on it with a 3" lift, the front flaps where gone, and I still rubbed on my fenders even with trimming. Im at about 5.5-6" lift right now and I have 100% clerance of my fenders. I love 285's I just sold this set and am buying another set of 285/70/17's

 

Thanks to everyone for the responses. This is turning out to be a really hard decision.

My setup in the front is going to include a pair of Icons CO's and TC UCAs, so I'll at least have the ability to adjust. It seems like a lot of people here on the board are running 285's but the clearance and trimming seems to vary greatly per truck. I'd really like to go with the 285's (i.e. more selection and cheaper). but I really don't want to have to massively cut into my fender and wheel well.

Have there been many people on here that have had minimal trimming with 285's and a similar setup.

Like I said, I was exactly where you were. In fact, I plan on going with icons set at 2.5 Look around you local area to see if you can't find some trucks with different setups in person. Everything looks way bigger in person.

 

I think things do vary greatly from truck to truck. My rims are 17x9, 4.5BS -12mm offset with 285/70/17 tires and I had to do a great deal of trimming of the plastic, and I still rub on the cab mount when I'm backing up and turning almost to full lock or turning while going over a bump/sudden incline.

 

Honestly, If you arnt going to go any taller than 3" I would run the 275's. Even if you trim with 285's your going to rub on your fenders and tear the hell out of them, ill go down and take a pic of my flares from where the last dude tryd running 285's on a 3" lift,

 

Kinda hard to see, but the entire bottem of both my front flares are completly gone on the inside.. But thats just a good reason to buy a set of bushwhacker flares now that I dont rub
