If you're finding articles documenting a change to synthetic oil causing seals to leak, check out the date of the article. It was a common issue when they first came out but modern synthetics aren't plagued by the same issues. Now, you can switch between synthetic and dino oil every other oil change and you'll be just fine.

What a great thread! I'm sure the answers in here somewhere, but can someone tell me which fluid (and additive if needed) for my 2009, 4.0, 4x4, trd sports to change the front and back? Thank you

so just to make sure I'm clear on what I've read here about the rear diff, it takes 3QTs and Royal Purple 75w-90 synthetic gear oil can be used and I do not need LSD additive since I have a 2013 TRD Sport, correct? and for the front diff it takes 1.6Qts and the same Royal Purple oil can be used and the transfer case takes 1.1QTs and it to can be filled with Royal Purple?

    Sounds correct to me.
    Tools:
    - 10mm hex head socket for front drain and fill plugs
    - 24mm socket for rear drain and fill plugs and transfer case plugs

*sigh* I've probably read 50 of these 79 pages...

2014 TRD Sport... do I have to add the LSD additive on the '14 for the rear or not?

My truck doesn't even have 1000 miles on it yet, but I am doing a lot of reading to get smarter for when I have to do this stuff. That way when it comes time to do it, I ain't waiting for an answer.

Crawl under and check your differential. It will say LSD if it is a limited slip diff. I believe that if you have atrac it is not a LSD. Best bet is to check it out. If it is there would be a LSD sticker by your fill plug.

HA! Just after I posted that I went down stairs to crawl under the truck... as I said, I have the Sport and there is no LSD sticker there. While I was under there I located all the plugs I'd need to remove from both pumpkins and the xfer case. Looks easy enough.

With the sr5 model, I have no LSD(pretty sure) so I don't need the additive, right? Just the oil?

I believe you would be correct. As stated above you there should be a sticker if otherwise.

'05 sr5 no LSD = no additive, correct.

Nice, just double checking, maybe do this when it gets warmer or could I drive around to warm up the oil a little then do the change?

Is this the correct additive that I need? It's what the dealership sold me and I just want to make sure it's the correct one. Came in a 6 oz bottle.
