Changing gear oil

It's pretty simple. The fluid smells like ass so try to keep from spilling on you.

Follow the above threads and in a couple hours you are done and back to driving. And no, you don't need a limited slip additive.

 

super easy, just make sure you have everything you need before you start.
My driveway still smells of old diff fluid from when I spilled in the fall.

 

Just out of curiosity, can you return used gear oil to Autozone/O'reillys just like engine oil? I assume so, but I've never changed differential fluids before.

 

Yes, they take everything except antifreeze. You can even mix all of it. They dont care. Just no water or antifreeze. Also if you need to get rid of antifreeze just flush it down the toilet. Any capable water treatment facility can remove the small traces if any that are left behind.

 

OP, I see you are in NH. I'm in Mass, you will have a bitch of a time getting the plugs out. I had to buy a new rear diff fill plug cause it was so rusted on. I'm just thankful it didn't break off in the housing, like some other poor bastard had happen. PB blaster every day for a week and rapping on the bolts seemed to work. Good luck

 

To fill the rear diff you can snake a hose from the fill hole up over the rear wheel and pour the diff fluid down rather than lay down on the ground. Much better.
