BTW, can't say enough about the veritas low-angle block plane, ...works wonders on the endgrain, right out of the box (i didn't hone the blade)!

Started working on our fireplace wall. The bio-ethanol fireplace will go in the middle so I'm going to put a fire resistant backing in there. I'm going to put some stacked stone tile on the wall in the openings (6" x 24" tile). I'm wiring up 5 3" can lights at the top (one on each side and 3 in the middle). I've lined the inside with wood which will be stained. The wood planks are not attached yet. I just put them in to check the fit. The face will be drywalled.

got a vinyl siding question. i'm not sure what joe schmoe did the siding on my house, but a lot of it makes me scratch my head. i also know enough about vinyl siding to be very dangerous so bear with me if this is a stupid question. the first row of siding (the row just up from the foundation of the house) is very loose. not on the ends, but on the bottom. i can easily fit my hand behind it. it looks like there is some sort of channel there for the piece to fit in but i dont know if the installer never installed it correctly or if they didnt take expansion and contraction into account or what. Here is my question. is there some sort of adhesive that i could use to run a bead the lenght of that channel underneath and press that first row of siding into it so it eliminates this gap? i just really dont want pests and wasps and such making homes in that gap. if it helps, i cant get a pic of the areas after work today.

Thank you! Funny thing is, I said the same exact thing to my fiance'! Right when it was done I literally told her that it felt like it was a completely difference house due to a simple paint job lol.

 

What the hell do I do with this? Finally finished removing all the wall paper and all the old original paint is peeling like such. I applied a sealer (Zinser Problem Surface Sealer) last night in a hope to keep any additional flakes from showing up. Didn't work :/

That said - do I have to skim coat the walls with joint compound? I am really trying to avoid doing that as I do not have the best mudding skills. If I scrape it one more time with a large putty knife, would a primer keep the paint from continuing to flake?

Looks good. You can really see a lot of the detail with the new color.

 

What did you use to get the wallpaper off?

 

Used DIF solution sprayed on the walls then a putty knife to scrape off the glue.

 

Maybe try some DIF on a small section and see if it causes it to peel away. Then, maybe you can redo the DIF on a larger scale to get the paint off at least on the trouble spots.

 

I haven't posted here in a while, but I figured I'd post my latest project. Back in December, I started remodeling our master bathroom. I finished up about 3-4 weeks ago, it turned out great.

Here's what I did:
Removed the garden tub and replaced with a big walk-in shower (kerdi system).
Replaced the 4x4 picture window with a 4x2 window mounted higher on the wall.
Turned the old "phone booth" sized shower area into built in storage cabinets. (Custom built by me)
Replaced the swing door with a pocket door.
Chopped out part of the dividing wall to allow more light in and trimmed out a column.
New vanity (custom built by me)
Matching granite for the vanity top, shower curb, and shower bench seat.
Tiled the floor 12x24" tiles.
Stile and rail Wainscoting on the walls and crown moulding.

I have a tub in the other bathroom so I wasn't worried about losing a tub.
